Handcrafted custom home furnishings with your fabric or ours—fabric assessment, design, and fabrication all handled together. Nothing gets lost between planning and making.

Most home furnishing decisions happen in isolation—you browse (and maybe you get advice from a decorator who selects), stores sell, and workrooms construct. We do it all.

Whether you bring your own fabric or need us to help you select premium materials, we assess performance for your specific applications, design and handcraft custom-made pillows, bedding, window treatments, and seat cushions in our Greensboro studio.

This integrated approach means we understand what materials work where and why.

  •  • Bedding that fits non-standard mattresses and bed frames.

  • • Window treatments addressing your specific challenges—unusual dimensions, real blackout capability that prevents light leaks, coordinating style across open floor plans and adjacent rooms.

  • • Throw pillows and cushions sized and made-to-order for your specific furniture and how you actually use your space.

When you partner with us, you receive insights that typical workrooms, upholsterers, and even many interior designers simply can't provide—knowledge gained from 20+ years making custom home furnishings for real homes with real families. From concept to craft—the same person who guides your fabric selection, suitability assessment, and design decisions is the one fabricating what you'll live with. We've observed how materials perform in real life, which construction options hold up over years of use, and which choices clients are still grateful for a decade later. Experience, observation, and client feedback guide every recommendation we make.

With us, there’s no isolated decision making. From fabric selection and materials assessment to design and fabrication—we handle everything, and we love what we do.

What Makes Our Holistic Design Approach Different:
Consultation Over
Order-Taking

We don't just make what you ask for—we ask targeted questions that lead to better, more thoughtfully designed results.

  • • Where will these pillows and home furnishings live?

  • • How will they be used—display only, daily lounging, or high-traffic family use?

  • • Who uses the space—kids, pets?

  • • What colors, patterns, and textures already exist in the room—furniture, window treatments, artwork, and rugs?

These details significantly influence our recommendations. We prioritize real-world performance over aesthetics alone—navigating you from what looks good to what works best for your life. The goal: high-quality materials and design that combine the desire for luxury and beauty with the practical need for durability and pull your room together in a way that feels intentional and collected-over-time rather than assembled all at once.

Those targeted questions reveal what's missing or needs to change—and what to do about it. Whether you need:

  • • adequate light control for a sun-drenched room

  • • durable seating support for active families with pets

  • • properly fitting bedding for a vacation home

  • • colors and patterns that make a space feel authentically yours through major life transitions like becoming empty nesters, adding a second home, or downsizing

—we develop plans that enhance what you already have while addressing the challenges you're experiencing.

Why Fabric Selection Matters for Custom Home Furnishings

What is Fabric Strategy vs. Fabric Selection for Custom
Home Furnishings?

There's a difference between fabric selection and fabric strategy. Most people focus on choosing fabrics they love and base decisions on cost, aesthetics, and functionality. Our clients are looking for solutions, not just materials—and that distinction drives everything about how we approach fabric recommendations for made-to-order throw pillows, bedding, window treatments, and seat cushions. Lifestyle performance capabilities matter.

Performance-driven fabric strategy—what we do—goes beyond material
selection. We evaluate fabric suitability holistically and assess how:

  • • Fiber content—natural vs. synthetic

  • • Fabric Weight—curtain-weight vs.
    upholstery-weight

  • • Drape—not too heavy or flimsy, falls in soft, fluid folds

  • • Hand-feel—flowing or substantial, not stiff

  • • Durability—resistance to abrasion and pilling

  • • Performance features—resistance to fading, stains, moisture, and odors, plus antimicrobial properties

  • • Care requirements—vacuum only, spot cleanable, or washable

match your needs, lifestyle, and intended use.

When choosing the best fabric for curtains or upholstery, we explain what to look for, why specific attributes matter, and how usage relates to abrasion-resistance, double rub counts, and pilling ratings.

We understand the growing demand for sustainable, non-toxic manufacturing and eco-friendly performance materials that are certified safe (OEKO-TEX), hypoallergenic, and ethically produced. Crypton and Sunbrella are two of our favorite options for combating spills, pet hair, and wear while still providing the soft textures and comfortable feel you want.

Our recommendations range from family-friendly performance options to high-end luxury fabrics and trims.

Our Fabric Strategy: Personalized Selection Based on Your Intended Use

We guide you to what materials are right for your needs:

  • • Eco-friendly performance fabrics that handle daily life with kids and pets—durable, easy to clean, and non-toxic

  • • Indoor-outdoor materials that handle rooms with strong sun-exposure and outdoor living

  • • High-end materials for statement accent and throw pillows, tailored bedding, and sophisticated window treatments

We love seeing what fabric you already have—called Customer’s Own Material (COM) or Bring Your Own Fabric (BYOF). We accept yardage you purchased elsewhere, custom printed fabric, designer remnants, leftover yardage from previous projects, and vintage textiles. We assess suitability for your intended use, check yardage, and determine what design options deliver the best results for your needs.

Designer Fabric Access: Our in-studio fabric collection features luxury brands and iconic designers like Schumacher and Brunschwig & Fils, Crypton performance fabrics, and Sunbrella and Thibaut InsideOut indoor-outdoor lines, plus popular options from Covington, Fabricut, Hamilton, Kravet, Magnolia,
P/Kaufmann, Regal, Stout, Waverly, and other leading brands.

Our connections in High Point—home to the world's largest furniture market—and trusted online resources expand options further, giving you access to trade-level high-end fabrics and trims.

How Our Custom Home Furnishings Process Works: From First Conversation to Finished Piece

We don't just make what you ask—we help you realize what you truly need. Through conversation, we explore your space, your lifestyle, and your vision to craft custom pieces that integrate easily.

• When you tell us "I need pillows for my sectional," we ask how your family room is used—do kids and pets claim that sofa daily? And we ask about your décor— what colors and patterns you're currently using, and which ones we want to build on?

• When you mention "a cushion for my breakfast nook," we want to know about morning light, kitchen wall / cabinet / countertop colors, and whether you prefer firm support or sink-in comfort.

• When planning a bedroom refresh with bedding and window treatments crafted specifically for you, we'll discuss sleep preferences, existing furniture fabrics / finishes, and whether blackout functionality or just gentle light filtering is needed.

These conversations guide our recommendations because what is
appropriate in a formal living or dining room might not survive real family
life in a great room or kitchen. And what is desirable now might not be ideal for long-term décor plans or feel welcoming and authentic for your family and guests.

  • "Can I use this fabric for my project?"

  • "What's the right fabric for throw pillows, curtains, cushion covers, or upholstery?"

  • "Which fabric will actually perform best for my lifestyle?”

—we hear these questions regularly.

The answers always depend on:

  • • The specific fabric—hand-feel, fiber content, weight, drape, durability, and performance features

  • • How you'll use what’s being made—daily functional use vs. decorative accent pieces

  • • Where you'll use what’s being made—outdoors vs. indoors vs. indoors with strong sun exposure

We assess your materials holistically, considering whether your intended project is the best use for what you have, not just whether it's possible.

  • • Have fabric remnants—not sure how much yardage you have or what can be made with what you have? We'll assess what’s possible and discuss which options best show the pattern and fit your décor needs, perhaps Euro shams, a bed runner, or a faux Roman shade.

  • • Want to use a stunning designer print in your sun-drenched home office? We'll evaluate fade resistance and sun exposure before recommending it for curtains—suggest interlining to protect your face fabric or a performance alternative that delivers a similar aesthetic.

  • • Considering soft chenille for kitchen bar stool seat cushions? We'll assess durability for daily high-traffic use and recommend whether it's right—or what would wear better.

  • • Have upholstery leftovers—not sure if you can use them on screened porch throw pillows and sofa cushions since they’re not completely exposed to the elements? Regardless of how protected the outdoor area is, we advise using indoor-outdoor materials especially in hot, humid climates where mold and mildew thrive.

Both local and remote clients can use our Digital Mock-ups service to see fabric and pillow arrangement options in photos of your actual space. Choosing fabrics, determining pillow sizes and shapes, deciding how many pillows to use, and figuring out how to arrange pillows on a sofa, sectional, or bed is easier when you can visualize the options in your room.

If you aren't local to the NC Triad and can’t bring your materials to our studio for assessment during a Discovery Meeting, we provide preliminary assessment before you ship any Customer’s Own Material (COM) to us, plus thorough evaluation once your materials arrive in our studio.

Clients frequently ask, “what’s the best fabric for throw pillows, curtains, or cushion covers?” The answer depends entirely on where and how they’ll be used. Your intended use and location determine what fabric we recommend—and why.

  • • Outdoor throw pillows, patio cushions and outdoor curtains as well as any home furnishings in sunrooms or near south / west facing windows need materials with UV protection for fade-resistance. Indoor-outdoor fabrics are made specifically for outdoor use and locations with strong sun exposure. See PRO TIP below for the right outdoor fabric for your specific situation.

  • • Great room furnishings—like seat cushions, ottomans, and throw pillows—need to withstand kids and pets. For these high-traffic family spaces, washable performance fabrics with high double-rub counts are best for durability and easy spot-cleaning. Save higher-maintenance, dry-clean-only and or vacuum/brush only materials for light-use accent pieces in less frequent rotation.

  • • Bar stool and dining chair seats / covers / skirts, breakfast nook and banquette seat cushions, and any accompanying throw pillows need durability and stain-resistance to handle daily use. Performance and/or indoor-outdoor fabrics with 30,000+ double rubs are best in kitchens.

High-traffic applications require stain-resistance and durability intended for daily use while direct sun exposure requires UV protection to protect against fading. We know which materials maintain their sophisticated style and plush hand-feel regardless of what happens on and around them. Well-chosen fabrics mean your custom home furnishings should outlast your color and pattern choices—you’ll be ready for a change and new look before your fabric is.

PRO TIP: Not all performance and outdoor materials are created equallylook for "fiber-level treatment." Unlike topical coatings, fiber-level treatment does not wear or wash off; properties (like color, stain-resistance, and/or fade-resistance) are permanently integrated into the fiber's polymer structure during manufacturing. Crypton, Crypton Outdoor, Sunbrella and Thibaut InsideOut use fiber-level treatment. Solution dyed acrylic combines fiber-level treatment with the most durable outdoor material—making it the best fabric for throw pillows, cushions, curtains, and upholstery in spaces with strong sun exposure.

Well-planned pattern placement, precise pattern matching, experience with directional nap layouts, understanding when to railroad fabrics, and knowing how to work around known and unexpected flaws, all factor into our fabric yield optimization. Our goal—regardless of what we’re making or whether it’s your fabric or ours—is to maximize both aesthetic impact and real-world performance.

Material requirements, yardage calculations, and construction techniques vary based on what we’re fabricating. Whether we’re matching pattern repeats within a throw pillow arrangement or a bed skirt, across multiple sets of curtains or cushions on various pieces of patio furniture, we apply the same thoughtful approach.

With yardage calculations, we always:

✓ Calculate yardage generously—add extra pattern repeats for cutting flexibility

✓ Account for pattern repeat size which significantly impacts total yardage needed

✓ Consider both vertical and horizontal repeats

✓ Consider pattern orientation (standard up the roll vs. railroaded) for fabric yield and design integrity—see PRO TIP below

✓ Allow additional yardage for directional cutting with directional patterns and napped fabrics

✓ Plan to have excess yardage to avoid the risk of running short

Knowing how to handle more complex fabric pattern matching scenarios—multiple coordinating items, large pattern repeats, or combining materials across projects and future phases—leads to results that look truly custom. We account for pattern placement flexibility while minimizing fabric waste, well-planned pattern layout for best pattern capture and precise repeat selection ensuring consistent flow so multiple pieces all have the same look:

  • Cushions: Centered or waterfall-matched cushions, ensuring uniform patterns across all seating.

  • Bedding and Window Treatments: Meticulously aligned patterns that flow continuously across seams, making joins disappear.

  • Coordinating Items: Seamlessly matched pattern across different pieces in a room.

Beyond just handling plaid matching, stripes, large florals, or velvet nap requirements, our detailed planning optimizes fabric usage and supports phased purchasing and projects undertaken overtime.

We advise clients to plan ahead whenever possible. This includes checking availability of additional fabric with the same dye lot. If yardage needs are known and budget allows, we encourage buying all yardage at one time—including additional yardage for future projects—to ensure consistency. Even first-quality fabrics show acceptable variation in color and weave between dye lots that becomes unacceptable when seamed together or used in close proximity.

PRO TIP: Understanding how fabric comes off the roll and which direction it should go is crucial in planning, yardage calculations, and achieving your desired results. This prevents ordering too much fabric or having to place seams in prominent locations.

Railroading—using fabric perpendicular to how it comes off the bolt—can eliminate seams on wide pieces like window seat cushions and sofas. It can minimize pattern matching waste and save money. The same is true for fabric that comes off the bolt already railroaded—oriented horizontally by the manufacturer. Check the label: "Railroaded (RR)" indicates horizontal orientation which is common with upholstery. "Up the bolt" or "up the roll" (UTR) indicates standard vertical orientation which is ideal for curtains.

If the fabric has a pattern like trees or birds that must be used upright or a nap (like velvet), it cannot be railroaded. Always check manufacturers' labels for "Railroaded (RR)" to avoid unintended horizontal patterns and to get accurate yardage.

Join our insider list to never miss a new guide launch or blog post. Look for upcoming How-to Guides covering what is railroaded fabric, how patterns impact yardage requirements, and other topics related to fabric yield optimization and how to achieve designer-looking results.

If you're planning updates in adjoining rooms, need performance fabric expertise for challenging applications, or need additional materials or complementary trim, our in-studio designer fabric collection and
trade-level sourcing connections provide seamless coordination across your entire project.

Which Room Do You Want to Start In?

Blackout-lined draperies—with advice and tips on hardware and hanging methods that prevent light leaks around the edges. Lining significantly affects how window treatments look, function, and last—blackout lining for light control and sleep quality, flannel-backed lining for improved drape and temperature regulation, or interlining for a luxurious, structured appearance. We provide lining recommendations for every window treatment project.

Duvets and bed skirts sized to your specific mattress and bed frame dimensions—including platform beds, adjustable frames, and antique beds where standard retail options don't fit.

Pillow arrangements built to balance function and aesthetics—pillows you'll actually use and decorative layers that aren’t overwhelming to move daily.

Sizing, fabric, and styling choices specific to your bedroom deliver results that are uniquely yours and can't be achieved with ready-made options—whether you're coordinating pillows with existing bedding or creating complete bedroom updates with luxury hotel touches like bolster pillows, bed runners, or throw blankets.

Custom shower curtains transform overlooked spaces—fitting unusual tub or shower stall dimensions while extending your bedroom's pattern and color story into your bathroom.

Popular requests: Layered pillow combinations with Euros, pillow shams, and lumbar statement pillows for king beds • blackout treatments that truly block light • bed skirts for non-standard frames.

Open floor plans need cohesive elements that unify connected spaces—we blend colors, patterns, and textures across your living room, dining area, and kitchen while addressing each area's specific functional needs.

Performance fabrics (Crypton, Sunbrella, Thibaut InsideOut) handle high-traffic seating where kids and pets spend time while maintaining the refined style you want. Today's indoor-outdoor materials are surprisingly soft and sophisticated—not the stiff outdoor materials you might remember—and we frequently use them for indoor furniture as well as throw pillows and curtains.

For loveseats, sectionals, and oversized sofas where pillow quantities and sizing matter most in mix and match layers, we determine the best combination of sizes, shapes, and fabrics—so arrangements look intentional rather than haphazard. "Designer-styled" curated pillow combinations for effortless looks—never messy, cluttered, chaotic, randomly thrown together, or "staged” matchy-matchy combinations.

Blackout-lined or interlined drapery panels control light, dampen sound, and regulate temperature in family rooms and home offices where these factors affect daily functionality.

Popular requests: Mix and match pillow arrangements for sectionals (determining the right quantity and sizes) • performance seat cushions for banquettes and dining chairs that withstand daily use • layered window treatments that provide both privacy and style.

Made-to-order performance fabric cushions for breakfast nooks and banquettes handle daily family meals without sacrificing style—stain-resistant, moisture-resistant, spot-cleanable, durable, and sized precisely for your built-in seating.

Dining chair cushions, covers, and skirts protect your investment while updating appearance. Often, reupholstering removable screw-off seats is all that's needed rather than replacing well-made chairs.

Window treatments address privacy needs while enhancing the welcoming atmosphere essential to gathering spaces—from relaxed panels or faux Roman shades for kitchen windows to more formal drapery panels (on their own or layered with light-filtering sheers, valances, or cornices) for dining rooms.

Popular requests: Banquette cushions with custom accent pillows • performance seat cushions for dining chairs • faux Roman shades on their own or layered with curtain panels

→ Reference full list of what we make above • Learn about design & construction details in What to Look for in Custom Soft Home Furnishings below

When properly constructed with outdoor fabric and dry fast foam or outdoor pillow inserts, deck, poolside, and patio cushions and throw pillows withstand rain, humidity and sun exposure—whether you're furnishing a North Carolina home or a vacation property in a hot, humid climate. We understand climate-specific performance needs for mountain, beach, and lakeside vacation rental properties or second homes.

Weather-resistant outdoor curtains provide UV protection, manage strong morning or afternoon sun, and add privacy to porches and outdoor
entertaining spaces—indoor-outdoor materials mean you don't have to choose between durability and style.

Critical details: Use solution-dyed acrylic fabric, open-cell dry fast foam (reticulated for quick water drainage and antimicrobial protection) with polyester batting, and pillow and back cushion inserts with non-woven polyester covers and synthetic filler outdoors to avoid mildew. We guide you toward appropriate options. And remember that even with fast-dry materials, storing cushions during winter or heavy rain extends their life, preventing the buildup of surface dirt that promotes mildew growth.

Popular requests: Fade-resistant pillows for sunny decks, balconies, and covered outdoor areas • chaise lounge cushions that dry quickly • outdoor curtains for screened porches.

Already have fabric, trim, pillow inserts, or foam you want to use? We welcome Customer's Own Materials (COM)—also called Bring Your Own Fabric (BYOF)—and evaluate your materials holistically before fabrication begins. We assess suitability for your intended use, check yardage, and determine what design options deliver the best results.

→ See full details below: Wondering, Is Your Fabric Right for Your Project? and Have Custom Home Furnishings Made with Your Fabric: Customer's Own Material (COM)

Swap pillow covers (keeping your favorite inserts), throw blankets, and bed runners seasonally—lighter colors for spring / summer, deeper hues and lush textures for fall/winter. This sustainable approach aligns with slow decorating—building intentional variety over time rather than replacing pieces seasonally.

The most sustainable choice is often working with what you already have:

  • • Update pillow inserts for a sumptuously plump, high-end appearance

  • • Replace sagging cushion foam to restore comfort in seating you want to keep

  • •  Have new cushion covers made using performance materials that extend longevity significantly

  • •  Remake or hem existing draperies for updated styling or new windows

  • •  Reupholster cornice boards with fresh colors and patterns

If we can save you money, reduce waste, or simplify a decision, we will.

Popular requests: New custom pillow covers for existing inserts • replacement cushion foam with performance fabric covers • seasonal pillow collections for year-round variety.

Already have fabric, trims, pillow inserts, or foam you love? We assess your materials holistically—not just "can this be made into X" but “is this material right for your intended use?" and "is this the best use of your material?"

We evaluate performance suitability, remaining lifespan (for existing inserts and foam), and procure supplementary materials when needed through our in-studio collection and trade-level connections.

Whether you've found fabric you love, designed your own custom printed fabric, have leftover yardage from previous projects, or want to transform materials with sentimental value or vintage textiles into something you can enjoy daily—fabric suitability for your intended use is the first issue we address.

Beyond consideration of how a fabric blends with the colors, patterns, scale, textures, and style of your décor, overall suitability for your intended use comes down to fiber content, weight, drape, hand-feel, durability, performance features, and care requirements.

Not every material is suitable for every application; matching fabric to its end-use and choosing the right material is crucial for longevity, aesthetic appeal, and comfort. Using durable (30,000+ double rubs), stain-resistant performance fabric is essential for daily-use kitchen
banquettes and family room throw pillows. For sun-drenched rooms and covered porches, opt for UV-rated light-filtering sheers and fade-resistant indoor-outdoor fabric for draperies and furnishings. Meanwhile, luxurious linen, velvet, or chenille is best suited for decorative Euro shams on a guest bed.

Evaluating whether a material is appropriate for your intended use involves more than it might seem at first glance. Fabric evaluation includes:

  • • Checking quality indicators using a host of visual and tactile inspection methods

  • • Recognizing natural characteristics vs. true flaws and damage

  • • Reviewing manufacturer’s technical specifications—from fiber content and weight to double rub counts

  • • Understanding performance capabilities (stain-resistant, fade resistant, etc.)

  • • Considering how pattern repeat, pattern orientation, and nap direction impact yardage requirements

  • • Determining yardage sufficiency

The need for fabric quality evaluation, determining suitability, and usable yardage, is essential for materials of all quality levels—first-quality yardage, remnants, and seconds. It may seem obvious with remnants (where yardage is limited and quality can be first- or second-quality) and seconds (where flaws range from barely noticeable to unworkable). However, the same is also essential with first-quality designer fabrics since they can have imperfections that were missed during quality control or have damage from transit.

INSIDER TIP: Most custom-cut yardage is final sale unless it's sold as first-quality and turns out to be flawed or is damaged in shipping, and retailers only accept returns or exchanges when fabric is unmarked and uncut. Remnants and seconds are typically sold "as-is" and returns are possible only for shipping damage occurring after purchase.

Customer's Own Material (COM) or Bring Your Own Fabric (BYOF) service means you provide some or all materials for your made-to-order throw pillows, bedding, window treatments, and/or seat cushions. Simply bring your fabric, trim, pillow inserts, cushion foam, and/or drapery lining you want to use and we’ll evaluate your materials holistically.

  • • Not sure what’s possible with what you have? We’ll evaluate performance suitability for your intended use, check yardage, and determine what design options are best for your needs.

  • • Have fabric remnants remaining from other projects or designer remnant finds? Bring them—we'll evaluate what's possible with the yardage you have.

  • •  Found fabric you love elsewhere but need coordinating materials? Browse our extensive in-studio collection and if you don’t see just what you need, we can source any additional fabric, trim,
    inserts, foam, or lining.

  • • Want to repurpose sentimental items? We’re experienced in transforming treasured materials into decorative accents like pillows and bed runners you'll enjoy for years.

  • • Want to use pillow inserts or cushion foam you already have? We’ll check material content and sizing, plus assess remaining lifespan and resiliency if you’re reusing or repurposing existing inserts or foam. When necessary, we’ll suggest other pillow insert types or sizes and advise on what foam density, firmness, and material compositions (open-cell dry fast foam vs. indoor cushion foam).

We handle fabric assessment, artful pattern placement, performance evaluation, recommending and/or sourcing complementary materials
when needed.

In our Greensboro studio, we have:

  • • Home décor fabrics from a wide range of well-known brands.

PRO TIP: Always verify your purchases for accuracy, quality, and suitability for your intended use. Many fabricators check for major flaws but may miss the wrong colorway, pattern, or yardage—that verification is yours to do before bringing or shipping materials. With pillow inserts and cushion foam, the wrong sizing, fill type, or density might be missed.  When providing your own materials—Customer's Own Material (COM)—inspection is your responsibility.

The details that make truly well-made custom soft home furnishings last—and continue looking designer inspired and feeling authentically yours—aren't always visible at first glance. You'll notice the difference over time in appearance, comfort, and durability.

The type of fabric, pillow insert, cushion foam, and drapery lining that is right for your project depends on the desired look and feel you are trying to achieve and the usage of your finished pieces. The options available for these inputs are numerous and not all are suitable for all uses or environments and they are certainly not all created equal. We recommend buying the highest quality materials that are within your budget and matching your choices to your intended use and anticipated usage.

Choosing Pillow Inserts

Wondering what's the best throw pillow insert material? It depends on your pillow's intended function and where it will be used:

  • • Frequently utilized throw pillows often need firmer inserts to maximize comfort and minimize frequent fluffing, while softer, plusher fills are suitable for decorative accent pillows that are rarely used.

  • •  Outdoor pillows require non-woven polyester covers with synthetic filler (cotton and natural fillers promote mildew)

  • •  Guest bedrooms and common living spaces benefit from hypoallergenic synthetic down alternatives

  • •  More supportive inserts are often needed for Euros on oversized sofas and sectionals than Euro shams on a bed, unless you like to read in bed.

We keep generous supplies of pillow inserts of varying types and sizes in our Greensboro studio for testing comfort and support. You can purchase through us or source independently.

Want to know how to select pillow inserts and arrange throw pillows like a pro? Planning pillow arrangements for sofas, sectionals, or beds?

See our How-To Guides | Pillow Styling Blog Posts for pillow sizing charts, pillow layering and arrangement advice, fabric buying tips, and what type of pillow insert is best for your intended use

Choosing Cushion Foam

Cushion function, location, and frequency of use determine what type of foam you need:

  • •  High-traffic seating needs firmer, high-density foam (1.8 - 2.5 lbs/ft³) for durability.

  • •  Occasional-use cushions can prioritize plush comfort (firm vs. plush: to match your comfort preferences)

  • •  Outdoor use requires quick-dry, antimicrobial dry fast foam (aka reticulated foam or open-cell outdoor foam)

We provide foam guidance and recommendations. You can purchase through us or source independently.

Choosing Lining for Window Treatments

The right lining depends on where your window treatments will hang, what you need them to do, and how frequently they will be used if they’re designed to open and close:

  • • Strong sun exposure: Light-filtering fade-resistant fabrics with minimal lining, or blackout lining to protect decorative fabrics from UV damage

  • • Bedrooms and home theaters: Blackout lining for light control and better sleep

  • • High-traffic spaces: Flannel-backed lining or interlining improves fabric drape, controls drafts, and regulates temperature year-round

  • • Valances and faux Roman shades: Heavier lining protects face fabric and prevents light filtering through

We provide lining guidance and recommendations. You can purchase through us or source independently.

Construction Details That Affect Longevity

  • •  Serged and reinforced interior seams and invisible zippers (standard on our pillows and cushions unless requested otherwise)

  • •  ¼" flanges, cording, and boxing (where appropriate) for structure and shape definition in throw pillows, duvets, bed runners, and cushions

  • •  Weather-resistant construction for outdoor pillows and cushions prevents trapped moisture and discourages growth of mold and mildew

  • •  Trim placement based on intended use—fewer embellishments on throw pillows used frequently (especially those used for lounging) and other home furnishings in high-traffic, daily-use areas, more elaborate details on accent pillows, bedding, and window treatments in high visibility, low-use locations

  • • Hand pleating for decorative pillow detailing, bed skirts, drapery panels, and valances gives a precise, tailored appearance that maintains shape over time

Pattern Placement & Fabric Yield Optimization

Our skilled pattern placement maximizes your fabric's visual appeal. Fabric yield optimization enables the most to be made from yardage with the least waste without sacrificing aesthetics—whether using your remnants (Customer’s Own Material: COM), our in-studio collection, or materials we source together.

Whether we’re making designer throw pillows, building mix and match pillow arrangements, designing layered window treatments, or selecting cushion fabric, we understand pattern proportions (how much large-scale print vs. small-scale), color balance (dominant vs. accent colors), and texture mixing (smooth vs. nubby) that creates cohesive, curated looks that work together aesthetically and functionally.

Want more details on how we do this?
see Yardage Optimization & Pattern Placement: How to Get the Most from Your Fabric above.

Understanding what custom home furnishings truly cost requires thinking beyond the price tag or quote for any single piece. Our economics-trained thinking reframes the question: from "how much does this cost?" to "what value will this deliver over time—and where does my home décor spending matter most?"

Investing in handcrafted pieces built to last means less frequent replacing or re-covering, so the cost-per-year of ownership is lower compared to mass-produced retail alternatives.

Choosing or designing pieces that fit your life—fabric selected to match your needs, custom sizing, and artisan craftsmanship—provides unmistakable value and control over what goes into your home and shares space with your family.

How to Increase Design Impact and Long-Term Value

Our investment-focused mindset makes it easier for clients to think beyond initial cost to long-term value. Together, we explore what home décor spending will give you the most satisfaction over time—we identify where to splurge on gorgeous luxury fabric and where to choose durable, stain-resistant performance materials. From high-end sophisticated dining rooms to cozy, lived-in family spaces, we focus on style that lasts, repurposing what you have and curating what you need.

We assist you in sorting through what matters most to you versus what initially catches your eye or seems to solve the problem you’re experiencing. Maybe you want matching window treatments throughout open floor plan living areas, but after talking through how you actually live in each area and what seems to be missing or not functioning well, we might discover a different approach is more appealing. Stunning curtains in the great room, relaxed linen panels and custom decorative pillows in complementary colors, patterns, and textures in the keeping room, plus a tailored faux Roman shade above the kitchen sink could transform both the look and functionality of your connected spaces more than identical fabrics or treatments throughout.

This investment-focused guidance is why many clients become long-term partners, returning for seasonal updates and new custom pieces as their homes and lives evolve.

Meaningful Change with Modest Home Décor Spending: Real-World
Examples

Single-element refreshes (new throw pillow covers for a home-office, updated patio cushion foam and/or covers, or a bed skirt crafted especially for an antique bed) often provide significant impact without maxing out your home décor spending. Well-planned multi-element integration (throw pillow combinations, window treatments, and made-to-order seat cushions for an open floor plan living area) yields broad changes in the look and feel of your home without requiring new furniture purchases or whole room updates.

Why start home décor project planning early: Smoother Scheduling & Material Availability

Planning ahead provides easier scheduling, better material availability, and more control over your custom home décor project timeline. Many clients begin planning their next project before completing this one, appreciating our holistic understanding of the evolving nature of their home and style. This secures preferred timing for seasonal refreshes or special events.

Material availability varies based on the material type and supplier. If we’re sourcing fabric, trim, pillow inserts, cushion foam, or drapery lining beyond what we have in-studio, then lead times are dependent upon the supplier and involve their processing (cutting / inspecting) time as well as shipping.

  • Typical Home Décor Material Lead Times:

In-Stock Fabric and Other Materials: 1–4 business days for processing (cutting / inspecting), plus 2–7 business days for shipping

Printed-to-Order and Custom Fabric: Typically 5–7 business days for production, plus shipping

Special Orders, Imported European Fabrics, and Hand-printed Linens: 2–3 weeks, with some international or high-end manufacturers taking significantly longer

  • Holiday/Seasonality: During peak
times, lead times can extend, potentially taking longer than 6–12 weeks for specialized custom materials.

Given these variable lead times for materials, beginning planning early ensures preferred seasonal timing and budget control—eliminating unwanted surprises.

Schedule your initial design consultation 3–6 months in advance for best material availability. Schedule Consultation | Get in Touch

Consider Long-Term Value: Cost-Per-Year Thinking

When asking “is custom drapery worth it?" consider the lifetime of made-to-measure curtains. Custom window treatments made with the right lining and fabric chosen based on sun exposure typically last 10–15 years. Mass-produced alternatives often fade, deteriorate, or shrink within 3–5 years. The math changes when you calculate cost per year rather than upfront price—and the quality difference is visible every time you walk into the room.

Ready-made alternatives typically mean standard sizing, lower-quality or no lining, and thinner fabrics that fade or wear out faster. Improper fit causes light leaks and puts tension on seams, accelerating wear—especially with frequent opening and closing.

Custom curtains typically are replaced due to a desire for change and a new look rather than due to deterioration. This is especially true when UV-resistant face fabric or interlining or blackout lining is used to prevent fading in window treatments on sun-drenched windows. From a tailored fit that eliminates light gaps to energy savings from flannel-backed lining, interlining, or blackout lining, custom curtains outperform and outlast ready-made alternatives.

While custom curtains involve a higher upfront investment, they provide better value over time through improved functionality and aesthetics from precise fit, enhanced durability, and increased energy efficiency.

Similar cost-per-year thinking applies to custom fabrication of any soft home furnishings. Materials chosen for your specific use, intentional design, and exceptional craftsmanship all extend the life and value of handcrafted throw pillows, bedding, and seat cushions—making the long-term value easy to see.

How to Get the Most Impact with Designer Home Décor Fabric

We provide insights and designer secrets—like where to use high-end
designer materials for maximum impact and where more accessible
alternatives offer a similar high-end look. We help you think through your budget, deciding where to invest in custom fabrication and how to choose fabric, ensuring your home décor delivers long-term value. We understand the need to balance aspirational luxury with practical
decision-making and help you identify where to invest for maximum impact and where accessible alternatives deliver a similar result.

We can extend high-end fabrics in multiple ways by carefully planning how and where we use them. Using high-end fabrics on pillow fronts and more accessible coordinating options—typically linens or velvets—for pillow
backs and cording utilizes luxury materials where they’ll be seen the most. Managing overall home décor spending can also be accomplished by using designer materials for lumbar pillows—the rectangular shape often requires less yardage while providing distinctive looks and versatile arrangement opportunities.

For cushions, we encourage clients to use the same fabric on all sides— the top and bottom for seat cushions and the front and back for back cushions—so that cushions can be rotated or flipped. While this may be more expensive in the short-term, it significantly extends the longevity of cushions. Similarly, using the highest quality materials possible— high-density foam and performance or indoor-outdoor fabrics with 30,000+ double rubs—for all seat cushions provides lasting comfort and protects them from stains and/or fading.

For window treatments, using the right type of lining increases the visual appearance, functionality and longevity. Blackout lining, flannel-backed lining and interlining all protect drapery fabric and can also assist in controlling heating and cooling expenses.

How to Get Custom Home Furnishings Made with Your Own Fabric: COM Service

Already have fabric you want to use? Using your own materials creates a layered, lived-in look that feels personal and curated—while often delivering significant savings.

Thoughtfully designing furnishings using fabric you love and/or materials you want to repurpose aligns with conscious consumption and slow decorating principles. This is quality over quantity in action: investing in fewer, higher-quality pieces made to last rather than buying pieces that will need frequent replacing.

Why Choose Our Custom Fabrication Service?

Here's what clients and interior designers say about working with us—from fabric decisions that prevented costly mistakes to collaboration that transforms how they think about home décor spending.

"Melissa explained that certain fabrics were too thick or not durable enough for the chair skirts I wanted for my dining room chairs. She found a stain-resistant performance linen that goes well with my curtains. It wasn’t as pricey as I had feared. She made such pretty chair skirts and choosing fabric was easier than I expected. Now she's making a window seat cushion with a really soft outdoor fabric that won’t fade like my old cushion fabric did. I hadn’t even thought of using an outdoor fabric inside."
— Fabric consultation with Greensboro cushion client

"I wanted pillows, a bed skirt for my king bed which is very tall, and blackout curtains. I needed the new fabrics to complement my duvet and favorite reading chair and not require me to change anything else in the room. Melissa created digital mock-ups of several different pillow layering options so I could easily see which looks best for Euros, king shams, and a gorgeous lumbar pillow on my bed. I’m happy with what we chose and have referred two friends to Melissa already.”
— Local client updating master bedroom

“Melissa redid the outdoor cushions and pillows for our beach house. I love the Sunbrella fabric and really hope this new quick-dry foam keeps my cushions from being soggy. She said it’s what I need since we’re bad about remembering to bring the cushions in when it rains.”
— Local client with beach house

"I've worked with several pillow makers and sewing workrooms. Melissa asked lots of questions and is very solution oriented. She suggests fabric and design options I hadn’t considered and helps me surprise and delight my clients. It can be hard to get on her calendar sometimes, even as a designer, but I’m always glad when we can work together."

FAQ

Absolutely—Customer's Own Material (COM) and Bring Your Own Fabric (BYOF) projects are a specialty. We handcraft throw pillows, bedding, window treatments, and seat cushions using fabric you provide—whether it's new yardage, designer remnants, leftover materials from previous projects, or vintage textiles with sentimental value. Before fabrication, we evaluate your fabric, trim, inserts, and foam for durability and suitability.

Yes—we always encourage getting fabric swatches whenever possible whether you are shopping for fabric online or in-person. Swatches let you examine quality, feel texture, and see colors in your actual lighting with your furniture and décor before making selection decisions. Live with swatches for a few days, observe them at different times to see how the color shifts from morning to night and from different angles and distances to see how the impact of pattern scale and texture changes. Test how they hang, drape, and lay. When considering fabric for curtains, check how the material looks against your walls in different lighting conditions. With fabric for throw pillows, bedding, and cushions, lay or pin swatches on the pieces they will go on—rotate the swatch and see if you like the pattern better when it’s flipped 90 degrees (aka railroaded).

For sizeable projects or materials that are high-end, have large pattern repeats, or distinctive colors and textures, we advise purchasing a yard rather than relying only on a small swatch. A sample yard vs. a swatch gives you a better sense of scale, drape, and how fabric will look in your space. This makes it easier to identify any potential issues—scale problems, color clashes, or style mismatches—before full yardage is ordered or fabrication
begins.

Swatches are available for most fabrics (nominal fee applies) and can be ordered online or requested during your Discovery Meeting or consultation. Swatches aren't available for limited-availability fabrics, special-order materials, or when we have minimal yardage remaining. When swatches aren't possible, we provide color-matching alternatives like
Sherwin-Williams paint color references.

Our optional Digital Mock-ups can show fabrics and pillow arrangements in photos of your actual space for confident decision-making before ordering.

Yes! We specialize in refreshing your existing furnishings, providing better value than buying new while reducing waste. From designer throw pillow covers and new cushion foam to re-purposing or hemming drapes, we help you utilize what you love.

Most fabrication begins within 1-3 weeks of final design approval and receiving your deposit and all materials (including Customer's Own Materials: COM and any materials we source for you) in our Greensboro studio. Actual timing depends on current workload and material availability. We'll include a timeline with your quote.
