How to Choose the Right
Home Décor Fabric:
Suitability Matching
& Quality Evaluation

>

Insider knowledge from 20+ years of real-world fabrication and ongoing client feedback—so you know what fabrics actually work where and why.

Whether you're choosing fabric for your first custom pillows, refreshing a room you've updated a half-dozen times, or assessing materials for a client—home décor fabric decisions require more than a good eye.

  • • Digital screens and store lighting distort color

  • • Small fabric swatches don't show full pattern scale—hard to judge a sofa or drapery decision from a 6×6 inch sample

  • • Colors shift throughout the day—what looks right in afternoon light reads differently at night

  • • Manufacturer specs are hard to find and often hard to understand—what are double rubs and how many do you need for your sofa?

  • • Performance capabilities—durability, stain resistance, fade resistance—can't be verified from photos or a quick feel

  • • Quality levels aren't clearly explained—and even fabric sold as first-quality can arrive with flaws or shipping damage

Add in the challenge of balancing aesthetics with practical durability—and the reality that most fabric sales are final. Miss a single detail, and you’re stuck with material that won't work for your use.

Most fabric decisions happen in isolation—stores sell, designers select, workrooms fabricate. We do it all—sourcing, evaluating, designing, and handcrafting with every fabric we recommend. We've seen the same
materials at purchase, during fabrication, and years later when clients return for new projects: more handcrafted throw pillows, bedding, window treatments, or seat cushions. As Greensboro's custom pillow maker and fabric consultant, we bring real-world insight to help you make confident fabric decisions—wherever you shop.

Pro Tip: Think high-end designer fabric is immune to flaws? Think again. Even material sold as first-quality—regardless of price point—can have defects that were missed during manufacturer inspection or damage from shipping. The ability to spot flaws and shipping damage is a valuable skill regardless of the type of material you buy. Knowing how to match fabric to your intended use protects your investment. And understanding how pattern repeat, orientation, and nap direction affect yardage means you'll know what fabrics work for your project—and precisely how much to order.

What Makes Our Advice Different

We understand home décor fabric from every angle—not just what looks good, but what works and wears well for your situation: kids, pets, daily use patterns, and sun exposure.

Economics-trained evaluation combined with 20+ years of material sourcing and hands-on fabrication experience means we know what fabrics work where and why. Our advice is not just theoretical; it’s based on real-world use. Since we build close, long-term relationships with clients, we hear not only how fabrics we selected together perform, but also how materials they selected on their own held up or didn’t hold up. Clients bring us pillows that pilled, draperies that faded, or cushions that showed every stain and ask what went wrong—why the materials they chose didn’t perform as they’d hoped. They want fabric they love that will actually perform well—and that's exactly what our fabric strategy delivers: solutions guided by aesthetics, grounded in performance.

While we maintain an in-studio fabric collection with hundreds of designer fabrics, we're not trying to sell you any specific material. We teach you how to evaluate fabric yourself—so no matter where you shop, you know what you're looking for and how to choose materials that will handle everyday life in your home.

How to Choose the Right Fabric: Lessons from 20+ Years in Fabrication

5 Things to Know Before You Buy Home Décor Fabric

1. How Fabric Flaws Impact Your Project

Understanding where, why, and how textile defects occur transforms how you evaluate fabric at every quality level. Learn what to look for, how to tell if flaws are workable, and how imperfections impact yardage calculations, performance, and long-term durability—never be surprised by missed flaws again.

2. How to Check Fabric Quality: Step-by-Step Fabric Inspection

Systematic visual and tactile checks catch flaws that casual handling misses. Our Fabric Quality Evaluation Cheat Sheet is your go-to insider’s fabric buying tool—use it anywhere you shop.

3. What Fabric Specs Actually Mean: Technical Terms Explained for Your Project

Don't guess if it's the right fabric. We translate technical specs—like double rubs, fiber content, and fabric weight—into plain language. From performance fabric for family spaces to light-filtering curtains, we give specific recommendations, so you know what holds up well in real homes with real families.

4. How to Calculate Cost-per-Year: Thinking Beyond the Price Tag

Upfront price rarely tells the whole story. Just like cost-per-wear in fashion, calculating the cost-per-year for home décor fabrics reveals when luxury materials are worth the investment—balancing expected lifespan and day-to-day comfort against your natural desire for change.

We break down cost-per-year and cost-per-usable-yard concepts in plain language. No economics degree required to start getting better value from your home décor spending.

5. How to Calculate Fabric Yardage

Pattern repeat, orientation, and nap direction affect how much fabric you actually need—and how much your project will cost. Getting this wrong is one of the most common and expensive mistakes when buying fabric.

>

The Fabric Buying Information Gap

Fabric retailers teach what they know—which varies by staff member and focuses on their inventory, not all possible options. Interior designers excel at aesthetics, but their attention to long-term performance, economic implications, and how pattern matching affects yardage varies widely. Manufacturers classify materials and publish technical specifications without explaining what those details mean for your intended use.

Can you use curtain-weight fabric for upholstered furniture? Is 30,000 double rubs enough for daily-use seating? What does "first-quality" actually guarantee?

Everyone offers advice, but nobody teaches systematic fabric evaluation. The insider techniques that help you make truly informed decisions—those have been missing. Until now.

How to Choose Home Decor Fabric: 4 Questions to Ask
Before You Buy

Choosing the right fabric comes down to four essential questions:

  • 1. Lifestyle and location:
"Where is it going, and who uses the space?"

  • 2. Performance and durability:
"How does it need to function?"

  • 3. Aesthetics and style:
"How does it look in the room?"

  • 4. Measurements and yardage calculation:
"How much fabric do you actually need?"

Our resources—and every project we take on—are built around these four questions.

What You'll Learn Here

How to Evaluate Fabric Quality: What to Look for Before You Buy

• How to read fabric specifications (double rub counts, fiber content, weight)

• How to spot manufacturing defects (printing errors, weaving flaws, dye issues)

• Professional inspection protocols adapted for consumers—a step-by-step process for catching what casual handling misses

• First-quality vs. fabric seconds vs. remnants—what these terms actually mean and how definitions vary by retailer

• Natural characteristics vs. true defects (when "imperfections" are desirable)

Yardage Calculations, Remnants & Seconds: What You Need to Know Before You Buy

• Pattern repeat allowances for project planning

• Yardage calculations that prevent costly mistakes

• Cost-per-usable-yard calculations (accounting for pattern repeat and any flaws)

• What to look for when shopping in-store vs. what to assess from online listings and photos

• Questions to ask retailers that reveal quality issues

• When remnants and seconds are worth it (and when to walk away)

Decoding Performance Fabric Specs: What Stain Resistance & Durability Really Mean

• How to read performance fabric specifications

• Fiber-level vs. topical stain resistance (understanding the difference)

• When outdoor fabric works well indoors (and when it doesn't)

• Application matching (which specs matter for throw pillows vs. curtains vs. upholstery)

• Collection-specific guidance (not all Sunbrella is created equal—collections range from indoor-outdoor upholstery to awning and marine use)

How to Buy Home Décor Fabric Online Without Regret

• Get fabric swatches—digital screens distort color and you can't assess weight, drape, or hand-feel from photos

• How to test fabric swatches in your actual lighting throughout the day (natural light, indoor lighting, drape on furniture or hang by window where material will be used)

• Pattern scale visualization from online photos and pattern repeat sizing info

• How to decipher fabric descriptions and specifications for actual use

• True cost calculation including shipping and sample fees

• Return policy awareness

Pro Tip: Most custom-cut yardage is final sale. Retailers typically only accept returns if fabric sold as first-quality turns out to be flawed or gets damaged during shipping. Returns are only accepted when fabric is unmarked and uncut. Remnants and seconds are usually sold "as is" with no returns. Always verify the return policy before buying.

Choosing Fabric by Use: Throw Pillows, Bedding, Window Treatments, Seat Cushions & Upholstered Pieces

• Throw pillow fabric selection: decorative vs. functional considerations

• Bedding fabric performance needs: washability, comfort, longevity

• Window treatment fabric considerations: drape, fade resistance, lining functionality

• Seat cushion fabric requirements: indoor vs. outdoor, everyday high-traffic vs. formal/occasional use

• Durability requirements for upholstery fabric: double rub thresholds by use case—what durability levels different seating situations actually require

What Are Fabric Remnants & Seconds?

Remnants and seconds can offer significant savings—typically
30-50% below retail—when you understand how to evaluate them strategically.

Here's what you need to know before buying remnants or seconds:

  • Are remnants first-quality or seconds? They can be either—remnants are defined by limited yardage, not quality level. Most
remnants or deadstock are sold by the piece and can range from fabric scraps to bolt ends

  • Do remnants always have flaws? Not necessarily, many are first-quality—quality varies by remnant type and source

  • When to buy fabric seconds vs. first-quality yardage?
It depends on your project's defect tolerance. If the imperfections are purely cosmetic and can be cut around or hidden, seconds offer a great alternative. Always choose first-quality fabric for highly visible uses or when precise pattern matching and flawless, continuous lengths are required.
