Most fabric decisions happen in isolation—stores sell, designers select, workrooms fabricate. At Melissa Creech Designs, we do it all. We source, evaluate, design, and handcraft with every fabric we recommend. We understand what materials work where and why—not just in theory, but from 20+ years of making custom throw pillows, bedding, window treatments, and seat cushions for real homes with real families.

Your Discovery Meeting is where that difference becomes tangible. Browse our in-studio collection of designer fabrics and handcrafted throw pillow covers with someone who can tell you what will work well for your home, your furniture, and how you actually live—and then make whatever that is for you.

What usually happens after your Discovery Meeting?

→ Most clients arrive with one project in mind and leave with a better understanding of what they need—and often more opportunities to consider than they expected. Many have us make throw pillows or custom seat cushions for indoor or outdoor spaces. Others decide they want to coordinate multiple elements at once—pillows, bedding, window treatments, and/or seat cushions.
Some come in just to browse and plan and leave knowing what they want to do when they're ready.

Whatever brings you in, you'll leave with more clarity than you came with.

“Understanding what’s possible, exploring options, and refining
your ideas is what our Discovery Meeting is designed for. We’ll discuss what changes will make the biggest impact in the look, feel, and comfort of your room while providing design tips for creating a cohesive, personalized home.”

Why Exploration and Planning In-Studio Matters

Home décor fabric and designer throw pillow shopping in Greensboro looks very different than it did a few years ago. Aubrey Home and several fabric retailers that once served the NC Triad have closed.

Our Greensboro studio is now one of the few remaining places where you can shop designer fabric and decorative throw pillows locally in person—and do so with someone who understands how materials actually perform as well as how to mix patterns, colors, and textures.

When you visit, you won't be browsing throw pillows and fabrics alone hoping something speaks to you. You'll be walking into a working design studio with hundreds of fabrics, pillows, pillow covers, and someone who has spent 20+ years understanding which materials perform well for specific needs and lifestyle requirements—kids, pets, daily use patterns, and sun exposure. You'll see how fabrics look together, how patterns scale, how textures feel, and how far performance and indoor-outdoor materials have come from what most people expect.

You’ll see pillows and pillow covers across a wide range of sizes and fabrics—most not yet listed in our online designer throw pillow cover collection and you’ll be able to work with our pillow designer on how to layer and pair fabrics to build curated throw pillow combinations that suit your furniture and décor. Browse, ask questions, and leave with a clearer sense of what you want and confidence that it will work in your home.

Conversation with someone who sources, evaluates, designs, and handcrafts with every material she recommends changes the quality
of every decision you make.

In your Discovery Meeting you'll experience our fabric strategy in action. We help you find or make something you'll love that actually works for your home and how you live in it. That means asking where your fabric, pillows, or home furnishings will live, who uses the space, how often they'll be used, and what colors, patterns, and textures are already in the room. The answers to these questions change everything about what we recommend—fabric, sizing, and finishing details. We guide you toward what's right for your specific situation:

  • • Performance fabrics that handle daily life with kids and pets—durable, easy to clean, and non-toxic
  • • Indoor-outdoor fabrics for rooms with strong sun exposure and outdoor living spaces
  • • High-end materials for statement throw pillows, tailored bedding, and sophisticated window treatments

Designer Fabric Access:

Our in-studio fabric collection features luxury brands and iconic designers like Schumacher and Brunschwig & Fils, Crypton performance fabrics, and
Sunbrella and Thibaut InsideOut indoor-outdoor lines, plus popular options from Covington, Fabricut, Hamilton, Kravet, Magnolia, P/Kaufmann, Regal, Stout, and
Waverly. Our connections in High Point—home to the world's largest furniture market—and trusted online resources expand options further, giving you access to trade-level fabrics and trims.

Bring what you already have:

We love seeing fabric you already own—known as Customer's Own Material (COM) or Bring Your Own Fabric (BYOF). We accept yardage you purchased elsewhere, custom printed fabric, designer remnants, leftover yardage from previous projects, and vintage textiles. Bring pillow inserts or cushion foam you want to repurpose as well. We assess suitability for your intended use, check yardage, and determine what design options will deliver the best results. Details on what to bring are in the next section.

Being in-studio exploring and talking possibilities is what a Discovery Meeting is—and it evolved naturally over time. Clients who came to drop off or pick up a project ended up staying to browse fabrics and pillows while discussing design challenges and plans. What was happening organically was genuinely valuable. We want all clients to benefit from this in-studio time, so we gave it a name and established clear parameters. Every client is welcome to browse and collaborate with us at our Greensboro studio—not just dash in and out to drop off and pick up.

What to Bring to Your Discovery Meeting

Below is a list of what to bring with you when you visit our Greensboro studio.

The most important thing on the list is photos. Bring relevant photos—even
better send them to us prior to your meeting. Photos are invaluable for
understanding scope, scale, and details that are difficult to describe in
words.

Tell us what you have in mind and when you can, show us with photos or even a simple hand-drawn sketch. Share details about your current
décor and functional needs—kids, pets, daily use patterns and sun exposure.

The more context you provide, the more useful our time together will be. That said, don't let an incomplete list stop you from scheduling—many clients arrive with just photos and questions and leave with an action plan.

Reference materials—help us see your space:

  • • Photos of your space from multiple angles, capturing existing furnishings, and décor elements (including window treatments, rugs, and artwork)

  • • Photos of specific furniture pieces needing pillows, bedding, cushions, skirting/covering, or seat bottoms needing reupholstering

  • • • • Straight-on shots

  • • • • Up-close shots showing relevant details

  • • • • Images of the sides, back, or underside when relevant

  • • For curtains and other window treatments: photos of windows plus nearby architectural features, furniture, or décor that impact drapery hanging, valance placement, or overall window treatment style

  • • Photos of adjoining rooms if you're wanting to create a cohesive look across open floor plans or connected spaces

  • • Paint color references, fabric swatches, or trim samples from existing décor

  • • Anything that shows the colors, patterns, and textures in your space — a throw pillow, cushion, arm cover, drapery tieback, or even a piece of artwork. Clients have brought faux florals, blankets, and pieces of clothing that went with the colors in their room. If it captures your color story, bring it.

  • • Measurements if you have them—beneficial but not required

  • • • • Furniture dimensions (sofas, beds, seating)

  • • • • Window measurements (height, width, architectural features), and room dimensions if relevant.

  • • • • Even approximate dimensions are better than none. Final quotes require exact measurements.

  • • Inspirational photos if you have them—Pinterest saves, mood boards, magazine clippings, anything that shows the direction you're considering

Physical materials—bring what you have:

  • • Any fabric or trim you're considering or want evaluated—new purchases, designer remnants, leftover yardage from previous projects, vintage textiles, or sentimental materials you want repurposed

  • • Pillow inserts you want to reuse or have assessed for remaining lifespan and suitability

  • • Cushion foam you want to reuse or have evaluated

We'll assess suitability for your intended use, check yardage, and tell you what we can make with what you have—including whether and how supplementary materials would expand your options. If you need additional materials, we can source them through our in-studio collection and trade-level connections.

Most importantly: Bring your questions and ideas. We'll handle the rest.

A Note on Material Liability: While we handle all materials with professional care, we cannot be held liable for damage to Customer's Own Materials during assessment, fabrication, or storage. We advise insuring valuable or irreplaceable materials before shipping or bringing them to our studio. This is industry-standard practice for Customer’s Own Material (COM) services.

What Our Clients Say About Their Discovery Meeting Experience

★★★★★

I learned more about fabric possibilities in 30 minutes than months of browsing
and online research. Melissa helped me understand what I needed for my
sectional without any pressure to buy.

★★★★★

The Discovery Meeting helped me realize I needed digital mock-ups before ordering custom pillows for my king bed. Seeing the fabrics in person made all the difference in my confidence level and seeing digital pillow mock-ups in photos of my room made decision making so much easier.

★★★★★

I brought fabric from previous projects, and Melissa immediately saw how to pair what I already had with a lush chenille she had in her studio. I never would have considered that combination, but I love it.
It opened up so many options for my whole living room.

How to Maximize Your Home Décor Spending

My economics background fundamentally changes how I approach fabric and design decisions—I think in terms of cost-per-year, not just upfront costs. A $150 performance fabric pillow that lasts 8+ years without fading or showing wear costs less annually than a $60 pillow that needs replacing every two years. Doing this math shows you when spending more now might save you money (and frustration) in the long run.

Your Discovery Meeting is where we combine sustainable, economics-minded thinking, fabric selection, and intentional design planning. We practice slow decorating—buying fewer, higher-quality pieces that reflect your authentic style and serve you well as your life evolves. We'll talk through options—whether that means investing in a few statement pillows in a Schumacher print for a high-visibility sofa, choosing a Thibaut InsideOut chenille for high-traffic family living areas, or using more accessible materials in less visible, lower-traffic areas.

We encourage you to bring your fabric—newly purchased sale finds, designer remnants, or leftover yardage from previous projects—and find out what we can make with materials you already own before buying anything new. The best starting point is often what you already have. Before recommending new purchases, we look at what's working, what isn't, and what can be refreshed, repurposed, or extended. If we can save you money, extend the life of pieces you love, or simplify a decision, we will.

FAQs

See our What to Bring to Your Discovery Meeting section above for a full list.

The short version: photos of your space, samples of materials you’re currently using in your space, swatches of any fabric or trim you’re considering, any materials (fabric, trim, pillow inserts, or cushion foam) you already have, measurements
(if available), and your questions.

Many clients arrive with just photos and questions and leave with a well-defined plan.

Not at all. Many Discovery Meetings start with "I know I want to update something but I'm not sure where to begin." That's exactly what this time is for — talking through what's missing or not functioning well in your space and identifying where changes will make the most difference. Some clients arrive with a specific project and leave with a broader vision. Others arrive uncertain and leave knowing precisely what they
want to do first.

Absolutely—many clients bring a family member or friend whose opinion matters to them. Our studio is comfortable for small groups, and different perspectives often lead to better decisions. It's not uncommon to have sisters or multiple generations in-studio with us—mothers and daughters, working together on their homes.

That's completely expected—Discovery Meetings are meant for exploration without commitment. You might use what you learn for future planning, seasonal timing, or simply to understand what's possible before you're ready to move forward.
Many clients who come in "just to look" leave with a clearer sense of direction than months of online research or fabric store browsing gave them. The value is in the knowledge and confidence you gain, not in leaving with an order.

Discovery Meeting—A complimentary 30-minute in-studio appointment with Melissa that is focused on fabric suitability and selection, project ideas, and assessing any materials you bring. Particularly valuable for clients who want to discuss a project or design challenge, explore fabric possibilities, get a quick Customer’s Own Material (COM) evaluation, or simply see what we offer before making any decisions. The first 30 minutes are complimentary; if the conversation naturally expands into detailed planning or sourcing, we'll let you know before continuing.

Personal Shopping Appointment—Also complimentary and at our Greensboro studio, with a narrower focus: browsing and selecting from our existing throw pillows, pillow covers, and in-studio fabric collection. Ideal for clients who want to shop our fabric and pillow collections with our pillow designer, experiment with how to mix fabrics, and learn how to build cohesive pillow combinations. Less project-planning focused than a Discovery Meeting.

Design and Fabric Consultations—Paid services providing comprehensive project planning, in-depth design development, and/or material sourcing beyond our in-studio collection. If your Discovery Meeting naturally leads here, we'll discuss it during your visit.

Not sure which to book? A Discovery Meeting is almost always the right starting point for NC Triad clients—it gives us a chance to understand your needs and direct you to whatever comes next.

More than most clients expect. In 30 minutes, we can browse fabrics and pillows, discuss multiple project ideas, assess materials you already have, and give you the kind of clarity that's hard to get from online research or fabric store browsing. Many clients are surprised to realize that what they came in thinking they wanted shifts once we talk through how they live in their space—and that the revised direction is better for their situation.
The value isn't in rushing through decisions—it's in leaving with knowledge and confidence about what to do next.

Come tell us about it. Even clients with a well-defined vision benefit from seeing fabric quality in person and confirming their choices with someone who has made thousands of pillows and other home furnishings and knows how materials perform. We often suggest refinements, complementary fabrics, or ways to enhance your ideas and what you already have so you can curate a naturally layered, collected-over-time space that feels entirely yours.
