Greensboro's custom throw pillow maker and fabric consultant—see it before you buy, with Digital Mock-ups
Visualize fabric selections, made-to-order designer throw pillow combinations, or fully custom throw pillows—from sofa pillows to Euro shams, pillow shams, lumbar pillows, and bolster pillows—styled and layered in photos of your room
Our Digital Mock-ups show you fabric, made-to-order designer throw pillow combinations, and semi-custom or fully custom throw pillows in photos of your space.
As a custom throw pillow maker and fabric consultant with 20+ years of hands-on experience in throw pillows, custom bedding, window treatments, and seat cushions, we specialize in:
- • Making and styling designer throw pillows
- • Designing custom throw pillows with your fabric or ours
- • Selecting fabrics for a cohesive, intentional look
- • Curating mix-and-match throw pillow combinations
- • Finding the best throw pillow arrangements for sofas, sectionals, and beds
- • Sizing pillows correctly for chairs, breakfast nooks, benches, and patio furniture
We bring all of this expertise directly to your Digital Mock-ups—helping
you visualize every fabric choice, throw pillow grouping, and layering option before you buy.
Most fabric decisions happen in isolation—stores sell, designers select, workrooms sew. We do it all. We source, evaluate, design, and handcraft with every fabric we recommend, which means we know how to choose fabric that not only looks good, but will also perform well in real homes. We consider daily use, kids, pets, strong sun exposure, and any other lifestyle or situational factors that impact what fabric to use where.
When Do You Need Digital Mock-ups?

or design consultation and need help visualizing how fabric selections and/or throw pillow arrangements will look before moving forward with your project

Are Digital Mock-ups Worth It?
Why Digital Mock-ups Are Worth It
Digital Mock-ups—sometimes called room previews or fabric renderings—let you test fabric combinations, throw pillow pairings, and throw pillow arrangement ideas in photos of your actual room. When you can “see before you buy,” decisions about color, pattern, scale, sizing, and quantity are made within the context of your space, not left to memory or guesswork. During conversations about what to preview and the process of creating Digital Mock-ups we often come up with additional ideas on pattern mixing, alternative ways to capture and highlight pattern details, or how to style throw pillows to balance aesthetics and comfort. Our fabric recommendations, throw pillow layering techniques, and styling strategies are based on what works in real homes—not rigid design rules—we encourage you to make choices that align with your goals and how you actually use your space. In addition to being able to see the options yourself, you can easily share your Digital Mock-ups with friends, family, a decorator, your interior designer, or anyone else whose opinion you trust.
Digital Mock-ups matter most for decisions that are hard to picture from fabric swatches or product photos alone:
- • How a fabric you love will look with the rug, artwork, window treatments, furniture, or throw pillows already in your room
- • How a large-scale print reads on a 22x22 inch vs. 18x18 inch throw pillow on a sofa vs. 14x20 inch lumbar pillow on a chair
- • When determining how many pillows on a king bed—3 Euros + 2 king shams + lumbar or bolster pillow vs. 3 Euros + lumbar or
bolster pillow
Digital Mock-ups are a way to explore options at minimal cost and a smart, easy step between browsing our online designer throw pillow collection and unboxing your order or planning custom throw pillows and placing an order.
When shopping for home décor fabric online, using a digital fabric visualizer or mockup is the best way to preview pattern scales and layering in your space. However, because screens can distort color, digital previews work best when paired with physical fabric swatches. Ordering a sample allows you to test the exact color in your home's unique lighting, and check the drape, texture, and hand-feel. For custom upholstery, curtains, expensive yardage, or hard-to-source fabric combining digital mockups with physical samples is the best way to find the right match before you buy.

Previewing Final Sale Items
Made-to-order, semi-custom, and fully custom throw pillows are a considered purchase, and like home décor fabric and many handcrafted items they are final sale. Throw pillows and pillow covers in our collection are custom cut and made-to-order, and once your order is placed, we may immediately begin cutting the materials necessary for it.
For in-person shoppers, we offer an exclusive 24-Hour Approval option—so you can try before you buy and see in-stock throw pillows and pillow covers in your lighting, on your furniture, with your existing décor. 24-Hour Approval is only available at our Greensboro studio and does not apply to online orders.
For custom throw pillows or any projects that require materials beyond what we have in stock at our Greensboro studio, changes to fabric, trim, or other components aren't possible once materials are ordered. When fabric is limited, as with remnants, discontinued materials, or fabrics with a high minimum order, there may be no way to get more yardage if you change your mind later. Digital Mock-ups give you a chance to preview and refine your choices before that point, while adjustments are still simple and possible.
The combination of visualization and our fabric expertise identifies potential issues like scale problems, color clashes, or style mismatches so you avoid design missteps and costly mistakes when choosing throw pillows or fabric for custom bedding, window treatments, or seat cushions.
→ See our Return & Cancellation Policy for full details on our final sale policy, online order cancellations and changes after submission.
Note: If you want to customize a throw pillow shown in our online collection (or in our in-studio collection) then your request is no longer a standard online order (or in-studio purchase); it is a custom throw pillow. You will receive a quote and a Client Agreement that includes Changes to Your Project Before Fabrication Begins section that details our cancellation and change policy for custom projects.
We practice slow decorating, conscious consumption, and have an economics-trained design approach—we encourage planning ahead, using what you already have, considering cost-per-year rather than just upfront costs, making smart investments in the highest quality
materials you can afford, and choosing home décor and furnishings that are made to last. Digital Mock-ups are a valuable part of this since they help you understand what you're getting and how it will work in your space before any materials are ordered or fabrication begins.
Who Gets the Most from Digital Mock-ups
Digital Mock-ups tend to matter most in these specific
situations:
• Visual decision-makers. If you think in pictures rather than fabric swatches and descriptions, seeing fabric choices and throw pillow combinations arranged in photos of your actual room is more beneficial than any amount of explanation ever could be.
• Clients living outside the NC Triad area or otherwise unable to visit our Greensboro studio. Working with us virtually means you don't have fabric bolts and in-stock throw pillows in front of you the way you would during an in-studio visit. Mock-ups are one of the ways to close that gap and allow you to explore options in your space before choosing fabric or throw pillow quantities, sizes, and styles.
• Significant home décor investments. Whether curating mix-and-match designer throw pillows, purchasing luxury fabrics and trims, or coordinating large yardages across a space, the need for visual design confirmation matches the scale of the investment.
Digital Mock-ups combined with our fabric knowledge helps you understand how readily accessible and specially sourced premium materials will appear in the context of your room and all that is already there. We focus on how to choose home décor fabrics that will perform in your lighting conditions, with your everyday lifestyle, as well as with any entertaining and hosting demands. Our goal is that your home décor spending delivers the sophisticated designer look and/or durable performance like fade-resistance,
stain-resistance, and easy cleaning you're seeking.
• Coordinating multiple patterns and colors. When new fabrics or throw pillows need to blend with existing décor elements from current throw pillows and furniture to wall colors, wallpaper patterns, rugs, and artwork—seeing everything together in a photo of your room makes it easier and more realistic than just seeing selections in photos of a flat lay, material board, or mood board. Digital Mock-ups are useful whenever multiple materials need to work together—your fabric with ours, or new pieces with what you already have. This applies whether we're incorporating your fabric or trim into one of our pillow designs through Customize Our Pillow Designs,
building from scratch through Custom Throw Pillows Made with Your Fabric or Ours, or fabricating bed runners and other home furnishings using your materials, ours, or a mix of both. Regardless of whether you’re choosing fabric from our curated in-studio collection, having us source materials for you, or you already have fabric (Customer's Own Material: COM), ensuring all elements come together rather than compete for attention is key.
Test & Preview Throw Pillow Arrangements: From Minimalist to Luxe
Digital Mock-ups allow you to test throw pillow arrangement options before you order—not just which fabric, but how many pillows, in what sizes and shapes, along with how to layer them. See tailored vs. casual vs. minimalist styling, various color and pattern ratios, or seasonal arrangement possibilities.
Beds: See the difference between
- • Minimalist look: Euro shams (twin: 1, full/queen: 2, king: 3) with a lumbar pillow
- • Fuller, luxe hotel-style look: Euro shams, pillow shams, and a statement bolster pillow
—before choosing quantities and fabric mix.
Sofas and sectionals: Compare a simple 3-pillow grouping for a loveseat or traditional sofa to a fuller 5-pillow layered look with a mix of square and lumbar pillows for longer sofas. For sectionals experiment with everyday comfortable 5-, 7-, or 9-pillow options including how to arrange throw pillows in the corner of L-shaped or U-shaped sectionals.
Chairs: A single accent chair needs only one throw pillow—but for a conversation grouping of matching or mismatched chairs, use coordinating throw pillows to effortlessly tie your living room together. Choosing between a 12x20 lumbar pillow or a 20x20 square pillow depends on your chair—what fits a deep club chair will easily overwhelm a smaller barrel chair. Always check your chair dimensions first and use a digital preview to ensure your throw pillow accents the chair rather than dominating it.
Breakfast nooks, window seats, front porch benches, and outdoor furniture: Preview performance and indoor-outdoor throw pillow combinations for high-traffic areas and locations with strong sun exposure. Just because a throw pillow is made with durable fabric doesn’t mean it can’t be stylish. Today’s performance and outdoor fabric options are quite soft and come in a wide array of sophisticated prints and interesting textures.
Lumbar and bolster pillows: These add structure and visual interest without the bulk or repetition of another square throw pillow—mock-ups show how a statement or extra-long lumbar pillow or bolster pillow anchors a grouping, whether centered, off-set, or layered in front of larger pillows.

2. Photo Submission & Space Assessment
Photo Submission for Fabric
If you’re previewing fabric for throw pillows, see Photo Submission for Throw Pillows just below this.
Interested in previewing fabric for curtains, bedding, or seat cushions?
→ See Custom Home Furnishings: See Fabric Previews in Your Space in How Much Do Fabric & Throw Pillow Previews Cost & What's Included? section below for how we handle fabric previews beyond throw pillows.
Submit high-quality photos of your space from multiple angles, including straight-on shots of furniture or windows where fabric will be shown.
- • When possible, remove any throw blankets, pillows, or decorative items you don't plan to keep using in this space so we're not working with elements that won’t be there long-term.
- • If there are furniture pieces, window treatments, or hard to move items that won’t be staying in the room, indicate that so that we know and if needed can remove them digitally. For curtain
fabric previews, it is not necessary to remove current window treatments unless you are ready to do so now. - • Provide photos with and without any existing throw pillows or other easy to move decorative items you plan to continue using.
- • Include photos or videos that show connected open floor plan spaces and/or connected adjoining rooms
Photo Submission for Throw Pillows
Submit high-quality photos of your space from multiple angles, including straight-on shots of furniture where throw pillows will be placed.
- • Remove any throw blankets, pillows, or decorative items you don't plan to keep using—or that obscure the furniture where new pillows will be placed—this ensures we're showing your vision rather than working around temporary elements.
- • Provide photos with and without any existing throw pillows you plan to continue using.
- • Include photos or videos that show connected or adjoining spaces if relevant
Photos and short videos are invaluable for accurate understanding of your unique project. Photos show scope, scale, and details that are difficult to describe in words. Short video walkthroughs that pan around your space—with or without your narration—give us a genuine, three-dimensional feel of the room and any adjoining rooms.
Sending Photos or Short Videos?—send photos and videos separately to melissa@melissacreechdesigns.com (reference your message so we can connect them)
For Digital Mock-ups image quality really matters so we provide detailed guidelines for capturing images that show colors, lighting, and proportions for optimal mockup results. See Photo Instructions & Guidelines for Digital Mock-ups section below.
Space Assessment
Fabric Previews
For window treatment, bedding, and seat cushion fabric previews, provide dimensions of any current pieces as well as dimensions of the windows, bed, furniture or built-ins so that we can understand the scale.
Photos and dimensions allow us to get to know your space as well as to identify additional fabric or trim we have in our collection that might coordinate with your space.
Throw Pillow Previews
Include dimensions of relevant furniture and any existing throw pillows so we can gauge scale. Knowing how long your sofa is, the depth of the seats, the height of the back and arms informs not only the number of throw pillows we recommend, but also the pillow size and layering options. The same is true for beds and all other types of furniture where you might want to preview throw pillows.
These photos and dimensions allow us to get to know your space as well as to identify additional fabric, trim, throw pillows, or pillow covers we have in our collection that might coordinate with your throw pillows or with any new throw pillow combination you are building.
Essential Photo Requirements
Camera & Equipment
- • Use your phone's main camera (not selfie camera) for best quality
- • Clean your lens before photographing—smudges affect image clarity
- • Hold phone horizontally (landscape) for furniture and window shots
- • Turn on HDR if your phone has this option
Lighting Requirements
- • Photograph during daylight hours (10am-4pm ideally)
- • Use natural window light—avoid artificial lighting when possible
- • Overcast days work well—avoid harsh direct sunlight creating shadows
- • If evening photos are necessary: turn on ALL room lights for even illumination
Room Preparation
- • Remove throw pillows, throw blankets, and other decorative items you don’t plan to continue using in this space
- • Clear coffee tables and side tables of books, remotes, decorative objects
- • Tidy furniture cushions or bedding—fluff and arrange neatly

→ See additional details above in Photo Submission & Space Assessment
Required Photo Angles
Straight-On Furniture Shots
Key for Previews of Throw Pillow & Fabric for Bedding or Seat Cushions
- • Position yourself directly in front of sofa, chair, or bed at seated eye level
- • Keep camera parallel to the furniture front
- • Include entire piece of furniture with small amount of floor visible
- • Avoid angled or artistic shots—we need accurate proportions
Straight-On Window Shots
Essential for Previews of Fabric for Window Treatments
- • Position yourself directly facing the window, with camera at a level that captures the full window and surrounding wall space
- • Keep camera in landscape orientation for wide windows
- • Turn camera to portrait orientation for tall or narrow windows
- • Include photos of each window needing curtains, blackout lined panels, valances, cornices, or faux Roman shades
- • Avoid angled shots—straight-on shows provide the most realistic proportions
Room Context Shots
- • Wide room view showing furniture in relation to walls, windows, other pieces
- • Include existing throw pillows, window treatments, artwork, rugs, and adjacent furniture for coordination planning
- • Show room's color palette and décor elements
- • Show view from room into any connected or adjoining rooms
Detail Shots
If Relevant:
- • Close-up of fabric patterns you want to coordinate with
- • Individual photos of any existing throw pillows you plan to continue using—straight-on shots of throw pillow sitting on furniture alone and side angled shots if layering is planned
- • Wall paint colors and/or wallpaper in good lighting
- • Colors and patterns in any window treatments, prominent artwork, rugs or carpeting
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- • Don't photograph from above (standing over furniture)
- • Don't use flash—creates harsh shadows and color distortion
- • Don't include clutter—we need to see the actual space
- • Don't take photos too close—we need context and proportion
- • Avoid extreme angles—keep camera level and straight
Tips for Best Results
=Color Accuracy
- • White walls photograph most accurately for color matching
- • Mention paint colors if you know them (Sherwin Williams Comfort Gray: SW 6205, etc.)
- • Include a white object (pillow, paper) in frame for color reference
- • Tell us about unusual lighting (north-facing, colored walls affecting light)
Scale & Proportion
- • Include familiar objects for scale reference (lamp, side table)
- • When you’re measuring furniture dimensions feel free to include shots with your tape measure or yardstick, especially if you’re unsure you’re measuring seat depth or sofa back height correctly or how to describe what you’re measuring
- • For any unusually sized pieces (oversized sectional, small loveseat) including a shot with a person or pet can provide perspective
Getting Your Photos Ready to Send
- • Send full-resolution images—don't compress or resize
- • Include photos from your phone's photo app rather than screenshots
- • Label photos clearly ("main sofa," "room view," "close-up fabric")
- • Send all photos and any short video walkthroughs at once, when possible, rather than multiple separate emails
Short Video Walkthroughs
If you're sending a video walkthrough:
- • Hold phone horizontally
- • Pan slowly around the room—quick movements are hard to follow
- • Include the same areas you photographed (furniture, windows, adjoining rooms)
- • Narrating what you're showing us is optional but beneficial
Photo Checklist Before Sending
✓ All temporary items removed from furniture
✓ Room looks tidy and uncluttered
✓ At least one straight-on shot of each piece of furniture where fabric or throw pillows are being considered
✓ Wide room view showing context
✓ Photos taken in good natural light
✓ Images are clear and not blurry
Questions We Can Answer
- • "Is this lighting good enough for showing colors?"
- • "Should I include the ottoman in the photo?"
- • "Do you need a closer shot of this fabric pattern?"
- • "Can you work with photos from this angle?"
Remember: Great photos make great mock-ups. A few extra minutes for a little staging, getting proper lighting, and correct angles is the easiest way to get useful results.

In our Greensboro studio, shop fabric and our entire collection of designer throw pillows and pillow covers—including options not yet listed online—with hands-on styling assistance from our pillow designer.
Take in-stock throw pillows, pillow covers, and throw blankets home on 24-Hour Approval—exclusively available to in-studio shoppers—to see how they look in your lighting, with your furniture and existing décor, before you decide. Many clients find that trying before buying answers many of the same questions a Digital Mock-up would. For larger quantities like throw pillow combinations for king beds or sectional sofas, clients often take some throw pillows home on approval to check colors and sizes and then use mock-ups to experiment with layering options. This keeps them from having to take quite as many throw pillows home to test and is a way to preview the throw pillow combination when some of the pillows in the grouping are made-to-order and thus not available to be tried at home.

How to Choose Fabric & Mix Patterns: Test Before You Buy
Choosing fabric based on a swatch or a photo is one type of decision. Deciding where that material goes—on throw pillows, bedding, window treatments, seat cushions, or furniture—is another. Digital Mock-ups let you test both before any fabric is ordered or cut, whether the material you’re considering is from our Greensboro studio, something we’re sourcing for you through our High Point connections and trade-level sourcing, or something you’re buying on your own. We can create Digital Mock-ups from any fabric if we have a high-quality photo of the fabric.
While we can show how a fabric will look draped across your bed or as if hanging by your window, our mock-ups are intended to help you gauge the fabric’s overall impact in that application—not to preview specific duvet cover or curtain styles.
Our Digital Mock-ups are primarily geared towards throw pillows. Determining where a fabric should go—what throw pillow shape, what size, next to what other patterns—is much easier when you can preview the options.
Same fabric, different throw pillow size or shape: see what changes
How oversized botanicals, dramatic tree of life, or cascading vine patterns with their flowing, sprawling motifs read depends on where they’re used. Large-scale patterns act as room focal points and fill vertical spaces well and are best on curtains, bedding, or tall headboards.
Some work on large throw pillows.
On a 20x20 inch square pillow, a large-scale print might be just right or seem like you’re missing the full picture. Sometimes you need to try it on a 24x24 inch or 26x26 inch Euro sham instead and Digital Mock-ups can show this. Other times you need to consider it for a bed runner, a duvet cover, or curtains where the whole pattern and multiple pattern repeats can be appreciated.
A fabric pattern that looks great on a standard 20x20 or 22x22 throw pillow can look completely different on a 14x20 lumbar pillow. Because less of the pattern repeat is visible, a smaller pillow size can simplify a busy print, tone down a bold pattern, or accidentally cut off your favorite part of the motif. If a standard lumbar pillow size doesn't work for your fabric, upgrade to an extra-long lumbar pillow like a 14x36 or 16x48 inch size. The extra width allows you to fully showcase large-scale patterns, making them ideal for toile landscape scenes and chinoiserie prints. Plus, these oversized lumbar pillows make a stunning statement on queen and king beds, entry benches, and settees.
Mock-ups let you preview a fabric on a variety of throw pillow sizes and shapes, so you're choosing based on how it will look when in use—not guessing or just imagining from a swatch. This is especially valuable with high-end designer fabrics. Opting for a lumbar pillow often requires less yardage and creates unique styling while offering flexible arrangement opportunities.
Same fabric, same throw pillow, different pattern capture: see what changes
Digital Mock-ups let you preview different pattern captures side by side, so you can see which one is most appealing, works best with a particular throw pillow size, and creates the aesthetic you want. Capturing a bird, flower, pagoda, or other distinctive portion of the pattern creates a certain vibe and likely highlights some colors more than others. This is also a great way to essentially edit out portions of the pattern that are less appealing to you.
Clients often ask “what is railroaded fabric” or “what is railroading fabric, and how does it look when rotated 90 degrees?” If you want to turn a pattern sideways—an orientation different from how it rolls off the bolt (known as railroading fabric)—previewing the design is essential. Digital mock-ups are useful for visualizing how a railroaded
pattern will look and allow you to choose the right fabric orientation for your furniture and accent pillows.
Railroading—using standard up the roll fabric perpendicular to how it comes off the bolt—works well for wide, seamless items like bed runners, bed skirts, deep seat cushions, and when reupholstering dining chair seats, or choosing fabric to have furniture reupholstered. Pattern
orientation matters for home décor accents too—for lumbar pillows, bolsters, and even for square throw pillows due to zipper placement.
Pattern suitability is key when deciding whether to railroad a fabric since not all patterns look right when turned sideways—directional scenes with trees, animals, or people look unnatural and with napped fabrics, pile brushes in an unexpected direction and catches light differently. For other patterns like trellis fretwork, ikats, and florals the impact of rotating the pattern is more nuanced and previewing how it appears when turned sideways is very useful. Even with chevrons, stripes, and oversized houndstooth it is beneficial to visualize how the pattern runs when rotated rather than just talking it through.
Pro Tip: Being aware and mindful of how fabric comes off the roll and which direction it is supposed to go and can go is crucial in project planning, yardage calculations, and achieving your desired
results.

Testing pattern mix before you choose fabric
Wondering how to pair large- and small-scale patterns, when to use animal print as a neutral, or where to introduce texture?
When mixing fabric vary the pattern scale and introduce added interest through texture variation for an intentional, designer look. Pair a large-scale print with a smaller-scale pattern like an animal print or an all-over pattern that provides visual balance and interest yet can read
almost like a solid color or rich texture from a distance. Add a solid—a neutral or a rich, deeply hued linen or textured napped fabric like a velvet, chenille, or bouclé.
Whether you follow a specific pattern-mixing ratio like the 60-30-10 rule (60% solids, 30% medium patterns, 10% bold prints), some other popular styling idea, or do your own thing you can see how it will look before deciding what’s right in your home. Knowing a design principle or having a plan or vision and seeing how it works or doesn’t work in your room are two different things. Digital Mock-ups let you preview several pattern-and-solid combinations together in photos of your actual space, so you can judge scale and balance before ordering. Seeing fabric side by side while also considering and experimenting with how it will be distributed throughout your room makes all the difference in determining what’s right for you.
Explore options without buying multiple fabric swatches
Comparing three or four fabric directions the traditional way means ordering swatches for each, waiting for them to arrive, and laying them out yourself. Mock-ups let you compare options in the context that actually matters—your room, your décor, your furniture—without the
swatch-ordering cycle for every iteration you're curious about. Once you determine a fabric mix you like, then you can order fabric swatches to verify color, drape, hand-feel, and other characteristics that are best done in-person.

Experiment with How to Arrange Throw Pillow Combinations
Wondering how to arrange throw pillows like a pro? Confused
by design rules and styling guidelines?
Popular Throw Pillow Styling Rules Worth Being Aware Of
Size and Layering Rules
- • Vary shapes: use square and lumbar pillows to build a balanced, curated look
- • Go big in the back: Place your largest square pillows (22 x22 to 24 x24 inch) in the back corners to anchor the setup
- • Step down: Move inward and forward with smaller sizes, decreasing by about 2 inches per layer (on sofas: 22x22 inch then 20x20 inch then a lumbar pillow and on beds: 26x26 inch then traditional shams then a lumbar pillow or bolster pillow)
- • Use the 2-2-1 formula:
For a standard 3-seater sofa, use two 22x22 inch pillows in the corners, two 20x20 inch pillows in front of them, and one lumbar pillow or accent pillow in the middle (or at one end for an asymmetric look) - • Size inserts up: Always buy pillow inserts that are 2 to 4 inches larger than your pillow covers for a full, plush look
Number and Balance Rules
- • Stick to odd numbers: Groupings of 3, 5, or 7 throw pillows look more natural and relaxed than even-numbered pairs which feel less casual and collected-over-time
- • Symmetry vs. Asymmetry: Match both ends of a large sofa for a formal look, or lean heavier on one side for a modern, relaxed style
- • Keep seating space: Do not use so many throw pillows that people cannot sit down comfortably
- • Match the sofa depth: Use smaller throw pillows (18x18 to 20x20 inch) for shallow sofas, and larger ones (22x22 to 24x24 inch) for deep sofas or sectionals
Color, Pattern, and Texture Rules
- • Create a cohesive color palette: Use colors that complement each other rather than match exactly—pull out 2 or 3 shared colors from the main throw pillow pattern
- • Tie it to the room: Pull at least one color from your room's furniture, window treatments, artwork, or rug so throw pillows feel planned but not matchy-matchy
- • Vary pattern scale: Mix a large-scale dominant print, a small-scale secondary pattern, and a textured solid
- • Mix textures: Combine different fabric finishes like linen, velvet, chenille, boucle, mohair, and
leather so the arrangement doesn’t look flat - • Vary application: Repeat colors, patterns or textures more than once within a room—use them in a variety of ways on throw pillows, window treatments, or upholstery
Think of these ideas as a starting point, not a rulebook. The real goal isn't just learning how to style throw pillows like a pro—it’s finding the sofa throw pillow combinations that elevate your unique space and match your lifestyle. Formulas won't get you there, but Digital Mock-ups will. Visualize your space, skip the guesswork, and curate stylish,
intentional looks instead of random collections.
From General Rules to Specific Decision
Rules are one thing, your home is another. Actually deciding whether your throw pillows, in your arrangement, on your furniture achieve a collected-over-time, natural feel or seem haphazard and cluttered is another—and that's a much harder call to make on your own, from memory or a product photo. Digital Mock-ups let you test the throw pillow layering decisions that are hardest to visualize on your own.
We can meet you at your exact moment of hesitation, say when you’re moving from a general rule like “stick to odd numbers” to a specific, purchase decision for a unique piece of furniture. Whether you want to:
- • See how throw pillows look on my couch or sofa
- • Experiment with how many pillows go on an L-shaped sectional
- • Try various options for queen or king bed pillow staging and play around with how to style pillows on a bed
Digital Mock-ups help you to move from struggling with spatial anxiety and worry over quantity and sizing errors to confident decision-making. And if you need further assistance then it’s easy to book a Pillow Design Consultation.
Build mix and match throw pillow combinations one pillow at a time
Rather than choosing a full grouping upfront, mock-ups let you add throw pillows one at a time and see exactly where a combination goes from sparse to styled to overcrowded. That tipping point is different for every sofa, sectional, and bed—what looks inviting and balanced on a deep, oversized sectional can be crowded on a traditional sofa. And with smaller pieces like loveseats, it’s important to make sure to keep some seating space. Is there still room to sit comfortably without having to move throw pillows aside? For beds, balance appearance with how many pillows you’re willing to move back and forth each morning and night. Testing incrementally means you stop exactly where your space calls for it, not at a number you guessed in advance.
See how new throw pillows coordinate with what you already have
Buying one or more new throw pillows to add to a collection is a different decision than starting from scratch. Mock-ups let you preview how new fabrics, sizes, or shapes sit alongside pillows you already have—so you're not guessing whether it'll clash, disappear, or pull the grouping together. Adding one statement pillow like a long lumbar pillow or a pair of stunning designer throw pillows can refresh your room and update your current throw pillows and furniture more than you might anticipate.
We love working with clients to see how we can extend the use and lifespan of what you already have and can customize or alter throw pillows you bought elsewhere or had custom-made previously.
→ See “How Much Do Customizable Throw Pillows Cost” | Learn about Customize Our Pillow Designs—Despite the service name, we don't limit customization to pillows purchased from us.
→ Read about our commitment to Thoughtful Design, Sustainable Values.
Test what happens when you swap just one element
Sometimes a throw pillow arrangement looks off, but it’s hard to solve the styling challenge on your own. Digital Mock-ups let you test one change at a time. Try swapping a square pillow for a lumbar pillow, a solid fabric for a bold pattern, or a large-scale print for a smaller motif. Experimenting digitally makes it easy to fix the balance of your sofa, sectional, or bed—without wasting money on home décor that doesn't work.
Compare symmetric and asymmetric throw pillow styling
Styling a throw pillow arrangement comes down to a choice between classic symmetry and modern asymmetry. Whether you prefer a matched, mirrored look or choose to mix up your throw pillow numbers, shapes, and fabrics, both approaches can create a cohesive and comfortable space. Using Digital Mock-ups allows you to preview both layouts side by side so you can confidently choose the best look for your room.

When Do You Need a Fabric or Design Consultation?
Knowing how to mix patterns, planning pattern capture and placement, and understanding when to railroad fabrics is all second nature to us since we've spent 20+ years doing it. We realize that may not be as straightforward for you—which is one of the reasons we offer complimentary in-studio time for
project discussion through Discovery Meetings, optional Digital Mock-ups, as well as paid fabric and design consultations.
Digital Mock-ups are the right tool once you already know roughly what you're considering—you have fabric in mind, or a few throw pillow options, and want to see how they'll look in photos of your room. A Fabric Consultation, Pillow Design Consultation, or Home Furnishings Design Consultation is the right choice when you're not sure how to address particular aesthetic issues (like how to introduce pattern in throw pillows or curtains without competing with an Oriental rug or clashing with colorful artwork), need ideas for throw pillow styling options in the first place, or want input on narrowing down or prioritizing where to start when refreshing your space.
Our personalized, collaborative approach combined with Digital Mock-ups helps you determine what you really need versus what you think you want. Together we can figure out what will work well in your room—solutions that solve any design challenges, functional issues you’re experiencing, or fill any décor gaps you currently have—versus what initially catches your eye. Wherever possible we encourage utilizing or repurposing what you already have and love. Digital Mock-ups allow you to visualize how to do this, whether you’re wanting to see how throw pillows look on your bed or how to refresh patio furniture by testing patio cushion fabric options.
You're ready for Digital Mock-ups if you:
- • Have a few style directions in mind and want to compare them side by side
- • Narrowed your choices some and need to test fabric combinations or throw pillow layering options to make final decisions
- • Already chose fabrics or throw pillows and want to preview them before ordering
- • Want mock-ups of new throw pillows with existing throw pillows to try mixing patterns and colors in various ways to see what works well in your room
- • Need help “seeing” fabric alongside your décor to gauge whether the overall look works or needs tweaking
- • Just need to see options visualized in your space, not talk through
them
A Fabric Consultation, Pillow Design Consultation, or Home Furnishings Design Consultation is right for you if you’re:
- • Wondering "what's the best fabric for throw pillows" or "how do I mix patterns without it looking chaotic"
- • Wanting personalized, one-on-one direction on throw pillow sizing and arrangement for a sofa, sectional, bed, breakfast nook, or patio furniture
- • Needing assistance with evaluating fabric performance and suitability for high-traffic areas, everyday use, kids, pets, or strong sun exposure
- • Planning window treatments or custom seat cushions and want to know how to choose curtain fabric vs. upholstery fabric
- • Seeking fabric and trim beyond what’s available in our in-studio collection and need access to our High Point connections and trade-level sourcing
- • Refreshing your bedroom and want to coordinate throw pillows, a custom duvet cover, bed skirt, bed runner or blackout curtains to create a calm, restful space
- • Searching for a fabric consultation or custom throw pillow design near you

See Custom Throw Pillows in Your Space
Digital Mock-ups are primarily for throw pillows and provide visual confirmation of throw pillow layering strategies and grouping. We can show fabric and throw pillows placed digitally into photos of your room—giving you an approximation of color, pattern, scale, proportions, and arrangement before you order.
* For any planned custom throw pillows made specifically for you, some design details are hard to show clearly—previews allow you to confirm the design direction and get a good idea of the finished look. We’ll let you know what to expect before we mock-up your specific modifications or fully custom throw pillows.

Custom Home Furnishings: See Fabric Previews in Your Space
For bedding, window treatments, and seat cushions, mock-ups work differently. We can show how a fabric would look hanging by your window or draped across a window seat cushion—useful for gauging the general impact of a material in that application—but this isn't the same as a styled preview of finished curtain panels or cushion covers. If you're evaluating fabric for one of these pieces, a mock-up gives you a sense of color and pattern in context, not a finished design preview.
→ Learn about our fabrication services for custom bedding, window treatments, and seat cushions: Handcrafted Custom Home Furnishings Design Services
A few other things worth noting:
- • Colors may vary slightly due to screen settings and lighting differences
- • Fabric texture and hand-feel can only be experienced with an actual swatch or sample
- • Final handcrafted pieces may have subtle variations in pattern placement and fullness from what's shown in your mock-up
We want you to shop with confidence. While our Digital Mock-ups offer a great visual preview, nothing beats seeing and feeling the material in person. We highly recommend ordering a fabric swatch or sample yard to check the color and texture before placing your order.

FAQ
A mockup (also called a room preview or fabric rendering) shows your fabric or throw pillow selections digitally placed in photos of your room—so you can see how they'll look before you order, rather than relying on a small swatch, a product photo, or your memory of a material you saw weeks ago.
It's most useful for decisions that are genuinely hard to picture on your own:
- • Whether a fabric will clash or compete with your
rug or artwork - • How to arrange throw pillows on your sofa or bed
- • What throw pillow combination will look best in your space
You don't need a mockup for every project—many clients move straight from fabric or throw pillow selection to ordering. Digital Mock-ups are for when seeing it first helps you confirm a choice, experiment with other options, and choose among selections.

Throw pillows should coordinate rather than match exactly to create a curated, designer look. Exact matches can feel flat or
mass-produced, while coordinating colors and textures create a collected, intentional aesthetic. For balance, mix different pattern scales, introduce varied textures, and pull shared colors from your room's artwork, rugs, or window treatments.

We need high-quality photos taken during daylight from multiple angles, including at least one straight-on shot of the window or furniture where your fabric or throw pillows will be shown. We provide detailed instructions on what photo angles to use, lighting tips, and what to avoid.

Digital Mock-ups give you an approximate representation of
color, pattern, scale, fabric layering, and throw pillow arrangement in your
space—informed by 20+ years of experience making custom throw pillows and fabricating home furnishings. For bedding, window treatments, and seat cushions specifically, mock-ups show general fabric impact rather than a finished, styled design.
Colors may vary by screen and testing colors in your lighting is always recommended. Fabric swatches are best for checking hand-feel, texture, and color.

Yes, you can see how our throw pillows look in your room before making a purchase. How you preview them depends on how you shop:
- • In-person (Greensboro studio): Take in-stock throw pillows and pillow covers home on [24-Hour Approval] to test them in your space.
- • Online and custom orders: Get Digital Mock-ups to preview fabric, sizing, and arrangement in photos of your room before ordering.
→ See How Much Do Fabric & Throw Pillow Previews Cost & What's Included? section above
→ Browse our designer throw pillow cover collection or Schedule a Personal Shopping Appointment at our Greensboro studio to shop home décor fabric, throw pillows, and pillow covers
Digital Mock-ups are priced separately and are not included with online, in-stock, semi-custom, or fully custom throw pillow orders.
Our tier-based virtual throw pillow preview pricing depends on your image count, number of throw pillow arrangements, and the level of design help you need:
- • Basic Requests: Simple "show me this here" image placements (lowest price).
- • Custom Styling: More involved design work and fabric layering (higher fee).
→ See details in How Much Do Fabric & Throw Pillow Previews Cost & What's Included? section above
Our virtual previews let you test fabrics, sizes, and throw pillow layering directly on your own furniture before you buy.
- • Match your décor: See how new throw pillows look with your existing room setup.
- • Find the right fit: Figure out the throw pillow quantities and sizes needed for your sofa or bed.
- • Experiment with styling: Test out different fabric combinations and throw pillow arrangements before you buy.
→ See details in How Much Do Fabric & Throw Pillow Previews Cost & What's Included? section above
Digital Mock-ups are billed as a separate, independent service and are not included in standard consultation fees (such as Fabric, Pillow, Home Furnishings, or In-Home Consultations), labor, or material sourcing.
While we frequently coordinate these services together, please note:
- • Product Costs are Separate: Digital Mock-up pricing does not include any physical fabrics, throw pillows, or inserts shown in the preview.
- • When to Use Them: Mock-ups are useful for previewing designer throw pillow covers before making an online order or visualizing custom throw pillows, bedding, window treatments, seat cushions, or upholstery projects.
- • How We Align Them: They are intended to help you conceptualize options discussed during Discovery Meetings, Personal Shopping Appointments, or consultations.

Yes. We create digital room mockups using your chosen fabrics so you can check colors, pattern scales, and room coordination.
What these previews allow you to do:
- • Answer questions like "Does this curtain fabric clash with my rug?" or "Will this pattern look good with my sofa?"
- • See fabric in your room: See how the fabric looks hanging by windows, draped on beds, or on patio cushions
- • Check the style match: Preview how the colors and patterns blend with your existing furniture and décor
- • Test the scale: Visualize how much of the pattern will actually show and if the pattern scale works so you can determine if this is the right fabric for this use
What these previews don’t allow you to do:
- • See specific construction details like curtain pleats, trim styling, or cushion thickness
These are digital previews not custom window treatment mockups or images of finished products in your space. They don’t render fabric on a chair or sofa like a fully virtual upholstery preview or show your fabric styled as curtains but rather give you a general sense of how the fabric will look in your space.
