Bring Your Own Fabric

New, Remnants, Seconds & Vintage
—
Greensboro NC & Nationwide
Greensboro's custom pillow maker and fabric strategist—evaluating your fabric holistically before handcrafting throw pillows, bedding, window treatments, and seat cushions. 20+ years of real-world performance knowledge.
We're Greensboro's custom pillow maker and fabric strategist, accepting fabric of all types—new home décor fabrics, remnants, seconds, vintage textiles, and sentimental pieces you want honored—for made-to-order pillows and other home furnishings. Whether you purchased yardage elsewhere, designed fabric yourself and had it custom printed, found designer remnants, have leftover yardage from previous projects, or inherited treasured materials, bring your fabric to our studio. We assess everything holistically and direct you toward applications that showcase what you have while ensuring it performs well for your intended use.
Unlike typical sewing workrooms that only fabricate what they sell, or workrooms that accept customer supplied fabric but require new, first-quality designer fabrics, we evaluate YOUR fabric—known as Customer's Own Material or COM—thoroughly, regardless of where you purchased it or how you acquired it. Our Bring Your Own Fabric (BYOF) service gives you creative freedom without limitations. We don't restrict you with pre-selected collections or first-quality-only policies. When remnants don't have quite enough yardage, we suggest coordinating prints or textures to extend what you have—or recommend alternative applications where limited yardage isn't a hindrance. We carefully examine second-quality fabrics (seconds) and vintage materials, accepting those with minor flaws we can plan around.
This openness to all fabric types—from designer samples to inherited textiles—comes from 20+ years of real-world fabrication experience. We've developed expertise in fabric evaluation, creative yardage solutions, and strategic pattern placement that typical pillow services and general sewing workrooms simply don't offer. We combine thorough performance suitability assessment, economics-trained thinking, and yardage optimization techniques to recommend the best way to use your fabric—then transform it through intentional design and handcrafted fabrication into custom decorative pillows and other home furnishings. We love seeing the fabric you bring and discovering what's possible with it. Whether we're working with your fabric or ours, every project receives the same careful consideration, creativity, and craftsmanship.
And if you're stuck at "what are home décor fabric remnants?" You're not alone. The defining feature of remnants is limited yardage. Depending on the type and source, remnants can be first-quality or seconds. Always ask the seller and assess remnants for yourself before purchasing. Many different names are used when referring to the many different types of remnants: bolt ends, end cuts, short yardage, flat folds, project leftovers, designer samples, cutting room scraps, or pillow scraps.
Why Do Workrooms Limit What Fabrics They Accept?
If you're wondering why workrooms limit what fabrics they accept, it is partly due to the strategic thinking required with Customer's Own Materials, particularly with remnants, seconds, and vintage textiles.
Remnants demand more planning and imaginative problem-solving. What's possible with what you have? Can you combine it with other patterns or textured solids? Should you modify your project? These are some of our favorite types of challenges.
Seconds and vintage textiles require extra scrutiny to spot imperfections or damage, and the experience needed to determine how to work around flaws or how to hide flaws in less visible parts of the finished piece.
Many workrooms prefer flawless, long continuous yardage because it's faster and more predictable. As a custom decorative pillow maker specializing in Customer's Own Material projects, we've built our expertise around the complexity that makes COM projects more challenging—and more rewarding.
Professional Partners Welcome: Custom Workroom for Interior Designers
We work alongside interior designers and decorators as a custom workroom partner providing fabric strategy expertise and handcrafted quality that supports your vision. What Makes Us Different: Expert Fabric Evaluation &
Design Advice
Unlike many workrooms that see customer-supplied fabric as a burden or liability, we see it as opportunity and approach it with curiosity and creativity. We don't just ask "can we make this?"—we ask "should we make this, and if so, what's the best way to use your
fabric?"
Fabric Suitability & Quality Evaluation Before Fabrication
We assess all fabric, trims, pillow inserts, and foam holistically—evaluating both suitability for your intended use and condition. This thorough process applies whether you're bringing us brand-new yardage purchased elsewhere or textiles passed down through generations.
Our examination considers how and where you'll actually use what make:
- • Daily use or occasional? (Family room throw pillows need different durability than luxury throw pillows or decorative accent pillows)
- • Kids or pets? (Performance requirements change significantly)
- • Direct sun exposure? (Fading and deterioration risks vary by fabric and where it’s used)
- • Indoor or outdoor? (Different environmental stresses require different capabilities)
- • Coordinating with existing décor or starting from scratch?
(Current colors, patterns, and textures in furniture, window treatments, artwork, and rugs matter when creating a cohesive space)
These questions lead to better outcomes. Where will these pieces live? Who uses the space? What are the actual performance requirements? The answers significantly influence our recommendations for any complementary fabrics that might be needed, and in the case of pillows for pillow sizing and finishing details, and pillow insert types.
We're rigorous and straightforward about what's feasible. We decline fabrication more often than you might expect—we'd rather lose a sale than construct something with materials not well-suited to the task. When we advise against fabrication, we explain why and suggest alternatives: different materials more appropriate for your goal, alternative uses for your fabric, or other methods of honoring sentimental pieces (like professional framing for delicate textiles).
Beyond "Yes/No": Fabric Evaluation &
Tailored Design Advice
Our 20+ years fabricating custom home furnishings means we understand how different fabrics perform in real-world situations. We offer insights and advice you won't get from most sewing workrooms or upholsterers:
- • Whether your outdoor fabric remnants have enough yardage
and are suitable for what you're envisioning—solution-dyed acrylic is durable for seat cushions while many outdoor polyester fabrics are less durable and more prone to pilling so we reserve use to back cushions and decorative throw pillows in covered areas with limited sun exposure
- • If your inherited textiles should become a long lumbar pillow for your bedroom, a statement bed runner, or would be better utilized as blocks in a decorative quilt (Note: we do not offer quilting services and suggest finding a craftsperson who focuses solely on making quilts)
- • How your bargain find compares to performance fabrics in terms of durability and stain-resistance for your intended use
- • Examination of any second-quality fabrics (or "seconds") you have. Many seconds only contain minor imperfections (dye lot variations, printing errors, or weaving inconsistencies) that we can plan around
- • Whether you need coordinating materials to supplement what
you have—we often have complementary options already in our studio collection, or we can source through our High Point trade connections
- • Creative solutions when yardage is just short of what's needed—we have numerous techniques for maximizing limited yardage (additional labor charges may apply, but they're worth it to use fabric you love)

Working with Custom Print-on-Demand Fabric
Custom-designed fabric from services like Spoonflower allows you to create truly personal pieces using family photos, artwork, or original patterns. Small run yardage like this requires thorough inspection—printing issues like color inaccuracy, pattern blur, or color drag can occur. We evaluate custom-printed fabrics the same way we assess any material: checking production and print quality, fabric weight and suitability for intended use, and yardage sufficiency.
Working with Remnants
Limited yardage requires creative solutions. We excel at extending limited yardage through well-planned pattern placement, combining remnants with
coordinating materials, or finding alternative applications where less yardage is needed.
Working with Seconds
Second-quality fabrics with minor imperfections can often work beautifully with careful pattern placement. We examine and determine if imperfections can be avoided entirely, hidden in seams or pleats, or utilized in less visible locations like pillow backs.
Working with Furs
Fur stoles, capes, vests, and coats can be transformed from forgotten closet items into luxurious lumbar pillows. Fur coats and vests can even become square pillows. Mink collars make distinctive trim accents. The age and condition of the fur determines whether finished pieces are great for snuggling or better as purely decorative accent pillows.
Working with Delicate Sentimental Materials
Sentimental materials are often more appropriate for accent pieces in occasional-use spaces like guest bedrooms, formal living rooms,
sitting rooms, or foyers—not highly trafficked areas where daily wear is a
concern. For exceptionally delicate textiles, professional framing or possibly quilt blocks may be better preservation options. Note: We do not offer quilting
services.

See how different rooms offer opportunities for using fabric
you already have—from repurposing vintage textiles to maximizing remnants and incorporating newly purchased yardage.
When mixing and matching patterns in pillows or across furnishings, choose combinations that express your authentic style and personalize your room. You can follow the 60-30-10 rule (60% solids, 30% medium patterns, 10% bold prints) or find your own balance. What matters most is varying the scale and incorporating texture—it adds interest without competing with patterned prints.

Popular uses: Repurposed draperies as throw pillow combinations • upholstery remnants as durable footstool or ottoman cushions • designer print curtains with tape trim on the leading edge
Dining & Kitchen: Throw Pillows, Seat Cushions & Window Treatments
Performance fabrics that spot-clean easily provide durability without sacrificing style—breakfast nooks, banquettes, dining chairs, and barstools handle daily family meals and entertaining with ease.
Window treatments address privacy needs in gathering spaces like kitchens and adjacent keeping rooms. The tone and formality of dining rooms are often established by fabric choices and drapery style—panels layered with sheers, faux Roman shades, valances, or cornices.
Popular uses: Indoor-outdoor fabric as banquette cushions with complementary accent pillows • performance remnants as bar stool or dining chair seat cushions • favorite print as faux Roman shade •
coordinating cornice and curtain panels
Home Office: Pillows, Cushions & Window Treatments
Improve daily functionality and productivity with blackout-lined or interlined drapery panels that control light, dampen sound, and regulate temperature. has meaning to you.
Popular uses: Linen seconds as curtains in a home office • designer samples as eye-catching lumbar pillows • performance remnant as desk chair cushion • textiles found while traveling as comfortable reading chair pillow
Outdoor Living Spaces: Pillows, Cushions &
Curtains—Weather & Fade Resistant
Outdoor living spaces can feel and look like extensions of interior spaces. Fade-resistant, stain-resistant, moisture-resistant fabrics (like Sunbrella and Thibaut InsideOut) can be surprisingly sophisticated and have excellent hand-feel.
Manage strong morning or afternoon sun while adding privacy to outdoor entertaining spaces with functional and stylish outdoor curtains.
Popular uses: Sunbrella chenille for chaise cushions and pillows • fade-resistant fabric for screened porch curtains • outdoor remnants for front porch bench pillows

What to Know Before Starting a Custom Fabric (COM/BYOF) Project
Why Fabric Quantity Matters for Custom Fabric (COM/BYOF) Projects
We need sufficient yardage for your intended use plus seam allowances, hem allowances, and pattern matching where needed. Borderline yardage limits design options. During assessment, we'll tell you what's actually possible with what you have.
If your yardage is on the borderline of what is needed, we have many techniques to make it possible to complete your project. Additional labor charges might accrue—but they're worth it to use fabric you love.
For example, if you're short on curtain fabric, we can create a tailored, intentional look by adding a wide band of coordinating material to the bottom or top of your panel to extend the length. This makes it seem like a design choice rather than a necessary fix. The key to this is choosing a fabric with similar weight and texture—using a solid color, subtle print, or contrasting hue yields an attractive, layered effect that adds visual interest.
If your available yardage is long enough for the curtain but too short for the hem, we can substitute complementary fabric (lining, sheeting, or similar-weight material) for the hem's hidden portion. This saves your primary selection for visible areas while providing a solution that's undetectable from the front. In this case, this little fix can remain our little design secret solution to your yardage issue.
How to Understand Home Décor Fabric Quality
First-quality fabrics have minimal or no
manufacturing flaws and represent the highest standard. These are often preferred since they have no noticeable imperfections.
Second-quality fabrics (or "seconds") contain minor manufacturing imperfections—dye lot variations, printing errors, small weaving inconsistencies, or physical damage (creasing, roller marks, etc.). Many seconds are perfectly usable with well-planned pattern placement.
Remnants are leftover pieces from previous projects or fabric cutting—they can be first-quality or seconds. The challenge with remnants is typically limited yardage rather than fabric quality.
We examine all types of materials and determine what can be made with your fabric.
PRO TIP: Always verify your purchases for accuracy, quality, and suitability for your intended use. Many fabricators scan
materials quickly for major issues but may not catch if the wrong colorway,
pattern, or yardage was shipped to you. When providing your own fabrics and
trims—Customer's Own Material (COM)—material inspection is your responsibility.
Before shipping or bringing fabric to a sewing workroom or upholsterer, ALWAYS inspect your fabric first. When you work with us, we conduct our own thorough assessment once materials arrive in our studio—giving you professional evaluation in addition to your own inspection.
Why Material Condition Matters: Fabric, Trim, Pillow Inserts, and Cushion Foam
Fabric and Trims
We accept first-quality materials, remnants, seconds, vintage textiles, and inherited fabric and trims—provided they're clean and structurally sound.
We assess each for:
- • Cleanliness:
Materials must be free from soil, stains, or odors. We do not accept soiled fabrics and do not offer cleaning, washing, or pre-shrinking services.
- • Structural integrity: Vintage textiles (including furs, needlepoint, crewel embroidery) and trims must be free from dry rot, severe sun damage, or deterioration to hold up to fabrication or wear.
- • Workable imperfections: Seconds with minor flaws (dye lot variations, printing errors, small weaving inconsistencies) can often be resourceful finds when flaws can be worked around with careful planning and pattern placement.
We examine all materials thoroughly prior to determining what’s possible.
Wondering how to tell if pillow inserts are worn out? You can assess this on your own or request our professional advice. Common signs pillow inserts need replacing include: lumpy or flattened inserts that don't bounce back, shedding feathers (feathers poking through the cover), permanent indentations, loss of shape, or discoloration and odors.
If you need to replace worn out pillow inserts, we can recommend high-quality replacements like 95/5 feather down, down alternative, or premium polyfill options—our choice for the best pillow inserts is based on your specific use.
How often should you replace pillow inserts? It depends on how you use and care for them. Regular fluffing, proper covers, and avoiding moisture exposure all extend lifespan. Feather down inserts typically last 3-5+ years with proper care, while synthetic fills may need replacement every 1-2 years in high-use applications.
→ See our Pillow Cover & Insert Sizing Recommendations as well as our Pillow Insert Sizing and Pillow Insert Type Guide.
Pillow Inserts
If you have pillow inserts you want to continue using, we'll check their current condition and potential lifespan.
If you're providing your own inserts, we prefer having them in-studio to assess suitability and sizing—especially important for unique dimensions or existing inserts you want to continue using where we need to evaluate remaining lifespan.
Inserts that are flat or shedding feathers should be updated to feather down or premium synthetic down alternative inserts for perfectly plump, high-end appearance and comfort. We sell feather and down alternative inserts that hold the iconic karate chop and provide pillow insert sizing tips to achieve that plump, designer look.
→ See our Pillow Cover & Insert Sizing Recommendations as well as our Pillow Insert Sizing and Pillow Insert Type Guide.
Our pillow insert advice varies based on where and how your throw pillows will be used:
- • Hypoallergenic synthetic down alternative inserts are good for guest rooms, shared living spaces, or anyone preferring non-feather options
- • Feather down for most indoor use
- • Weather-resistant inserts with non-woven polyester covers and synthetic filler for outdoor use
You can purchase pillow inserts through us (online or in-studio) or source them yourself.
How long do foam cushions last?
Lifespan depends on density, thickness, usage, and exposure to elements. Indoor foam typically lasts 5-10 years, while outdoor foam may need replacement every 3-5 years depending on exposure and care.
Signs of worn-out cushions include: lack of supportiveness, loss of shape, permanent indentations (sags or lumps), lack of resilience when pressed, discoloration, and trapped odors or mildew (common with outdoor cushions).
Testing cushion foam condition:
- • Press test: Push down firmly and hold for 10 seconds—foam should bounce back to original shape within seconds
- • Fold test: Fold the cushion in half and hold for 30 seconds—resilient, supportive foam should spring back and unfold immediately without creasing
- • Sit/compression test: Sit directly on the middle or front edge of the cushion—strong, firm resistance does not allow you to feel the frame beneath.
- • Sniff test: Musty odors indicate trapped moisture, mold, or mildew
Replacement of sagging cushion foam restores comfortable support in seating you want to keep using. New cushion covers using performance materials extend longevity significantly.
Cushion Foam
If you have cushion foam you want to continue using, we'll assess the current condition and potential longevity.
If you're providing your own cushion foam—whether newly purchased or existing—we require foam to be in-studio. We assess suitability and sizing—especially important for unique dimensions or existing foam you want to continue using where we need to evaluate remaining lifespan. Having foam in-studio allows us to get the most precise fit when making custom cushion covers—plus it saves you from having to put the cushion covers on yourself. Due to the fitted nature of cushion fabrication, putting cushion covers on is difficult unless you're experienced with the process.
Our foam advice varies based on where your cushions are located and how often they will be used:
- • High-traffic seating needs firmer, denser foam
- • Occasional-use cushions can prioritize plush comfort
- • Outdoor applications require quick-dry open-cell foam
We provide foam assessment and recommendations. You can purchase cushion foam through us in-studio or source independently.
Why is Lining Important for Custom Window Treatments
Due to yardage and performance requirements, curtains generally need lining purchased specifically for those windows. We provide lining selection recommendations. You can purchase drapery lining through us in-studio or source independently.
Lining is important for custom window treatments due to it’s critical functional benefits (sun protection, privacy, insulation for energy efficiency and noise reduction) and aesthetic value (fullness, uniform appearance). Durability, proper draping, and light control are required for
high-quality, custom-made curtains and differentiates custom work from ready-made options.
Our lining recommendations are based on window treatment type and function:
- • Strong sun exposure: Light-filtering fade-resistant fabrics with minimal lining, blackout lining or lining layered with interlining to protect decorative fabrics from UV damage
- • Bedrooms and home theaters: Blackout lining for light control and better sleep
- • High-traffic spaces: Flannel-backed lining or interlining (bump) improves drape, controls drafts, and regulates temperature year-round
- • Valances and faux Roman shades: Heavier lining protects face fabric and prevents light filtering through
We take pride in giving new life to pieces you already have and specialize in refresh and repurpose solutions that extend the life of your materials and furnishings. This sustainable, economics-minded approach often provides better value than starting over while also reducing waste. Utilizing
what you love is important to us.

What Materials Require Special Handling During Fabrication
Certain materials require adapted construction techniques that may result in additional labor charges:
Specialty Materials:
- • Vintage textiles (furs, needlepoint, crewel embroidery)
- • Delicate or fragile compositions
- • Unusual material types (non-standard weights, unconventional fibers)
- • Previously used fabrics requiring preparation (removing seams/hems, pressing)
High-Value or Irreplaceable Materials:
- • Designer fabrics with significant replacement cost
- • Sentimental pieces with emotional value
- • Materials requiring exceptional care to prevent damage
We assess special handling requirements during fabric evaluation and explain any limitations, extra considerations, and associated costs in your quote before beginning fabrication.
Our Approach to Customer’s Own Material (COM) Pricing
Unlike many workrooms, we have no COM, cutting, or handling fees simply for accepting customer supplied fabric. Our fabrication labor rates are the same whether we're working with your fabric or ours—there's no markup just because you provide materials.
We only apply additional labor charges when projects require extra time due to material condition issues or fabrication complexity (detailed below).
Understanding When Additional Labor Charges May Apply
Our fabrication labor rates are the same whether we're working with your fabric or ours. However, certain fabric conditions or project requirements may result in additional labor charges:
Fabric Condition:
- • Wrinkled and creased materials requiring extensive ironing, steaming, or working around due to being loosely rolled or folded during storage or shipping
- • Repurposed/previously used fabrics needing preparation (removing seams, hems, or other stitching and pressing)
Design Complexity:
- • Large-scale patterns requiring strategic placement to optimize aesthetics and fabric usage
• Pattern matching with large pattern repeats or intricate designs requiring precise alignment
- • One-way patterns or directional nap requiring specific layout
- • Railroading requirements that impact yardage calculations and layout
- • Limited or borderline yardage requiring creative layout techniques to maximize yield
- • Fabrics that behave unpredictably during construction (fraying, shifting, stretching)
- • Delicate or high-value materials requiring extra care and slower handling
- • Thin materials requiring lining or underlining for proper appearance and durability
These situations are identified during our fabric evaluation and explained clearly in your quote. We'll always discuss any additional costs and get your approval before proceeding with fabrication. If any unforeseen issues arise during fabrication, we communicate them immediately and discuss the implications before continuing.
Where to Buy Home Decor Fabric, Trim, Drapery Lining, Pillow Inserts, & Cushion Foam
You're Welcome to Supplement with Our Resources.
If you don't have quite enough fabric or trim or need coordinating options to create interest, we have an extensive in-studio home décor fabric collection and High Point trade connections. We can source complementary fabrics, trims, drapery lining, inserts, and cushion foam.
When Does Bring Your Own Fabric Project Timeline Begin?
Timeline Begins When We Receive Your Materials
The timeline for jobs with customer supplied materials starts once we receive your deposit and have all of your materials and any additional materials we're sourcing in our Greensboro studio. We'll include a timeline with your quote.
Rush services are available when our schedule permits.
Customer's Own Material (COM) Labor Pricing
Our fabrication rates are the same whether we're working with your fabric or ours—skilled construction and exceptional finishing don't change based on fabric source. Materials requiring special handling or yardages requiring creative techniques (like those discussed in the Why Fabric Quantity Matters section above) will result in additional labor charges. This would be the case for non-COM projects as well—it is just more common given the nature of using remnants, seconds or vintage textiles. We'll explain any additional charges clearly in your quote.
Our pricing breaks down every cost clearly—all materials, yardage requirements, and construction options—so you understand exactly what you're paying for and why. We provide itemized pricing for all materials and labor plus any fabric strategy and design consultation or sourcing service fees.
Materials You Supply
You provide any fabric, trims, drapery lining, inserts, and/or foam you have. We conduct an assessment of everything initially.
Materials We Source (If Needed)
If you need coordinating fabrics, additional trims, pillow inserts, cushion foam, or drapery lining, we source these and include them in your quote.
All materials must be paid in full prior to ordering and before fabrication begins.
Consultation Services (When Needed)
Complimentary 30-Minute Discovery Meeting—available in-person in our Greensboro studio for local NC Triad clients. This in-studio time is intended for exploration and an initial quick fabric assessment. Learn more below. Schedule Discovery Meeting
Many straightforward jobs don't require additional consultation beyond initial assessment. If additional fabric evaluation, project planning, or material sourcing is needed beyond this initial time, we’ll let you know and discuss how to proceed.
Remote clients receive preliminary assessment guidance before shipping. Get in Touch
Project Timeline Expectations
Pillow Timeline: Typically 2-4 weeks from design approval to completion
Other Home Furnishings Timeline: Typically 4-8 weeks depending on project scope
Most fabrication begins within 1-3 weeks of receiving your deposit and all materials in our Greensboro studio. Actual timing depends on current workload and material availability. We'll include a timeline with your quote.
Rush services are available when our schedule permits.

Why Choose Our Customer's Own Material Service (COM)
Here's what clients and interior designers say about working with us:
"I've contacted several workrooms and they all said no to my vintage fabric. Melissa examined it thoroughly, explained what was possible, and made beautiful pillows for my master bedroom. The care she took with my grandmother's fur cape and linens meant everything to me."
— Client who repurposed inherited textiles into handcrafted pillows
"I bought gorgeous designer outdoor remnants but didn't have quite enough for what I planned. Melissa showed me how to use what I had for decorative throw pillows and recommended coordinating outdoor fabric for the larger patio seat cushions. The combination looks intentional and saved me significant money."
— Client with designer remnants that we used to make luxury outdoor throw pillows
"I work with several drapery workrooms and Melissa is the only fabricator I trust with Customer’s Own Material (COM) projects. She thinks strategically about materials and provides guidance that makes my job easier and my clients happier."
