Greensboro’s to-the-trade sewing workroom and fabric strategist—holistic fabric evaluation informed by 20+ years of real-world
performance knowledge. Handcrafted pillows, bedding, window treatments, and seat cushions.
We're Greensboro's to-the-trade COM workroom and fabric strategist, accepting materials of all types—new home décor fabric, remnants, seconds, vintage textiles, and sentimental pieces your clients want honored. Whether you sourced yardage elsewhere, designed fabric yourself and had it custom printed, found designer remnants, or want to use a client's leftover yardage from previous projects or inherited treasured materials, we assess everything holistically and direct you toward applications that showcase materials while ensuring they perform well for your intended use. We also have an extensive in-studio collection of designer materials you can utilize.
Most fabric decisions happen in isolation—stores sell, design professionals specify, workrooms sew. We do it all. We source, evaluate, design, and handcraft, which means we understand what fabrics work where and why—not just in theory, but from 20+ years of fabricating custom home furnishings that perform beautifully in real homes.
Unlike typical sewing workrooms that only fabricate with what they sell, or those that accept customer-supplied fabric but require new, first-quality designer materials, we evaluate Customer's Own Material (COM) thoroughly—regardless of where you purchased it or how you acquired it. This gives you creative freedom without limitations. We don't restrict you with first-quality-only policies. When remnants don't have quite enough yardage, we suggest coordinating prints or textures to extend what you have—or alternative
applications where limited yardage isn't a hindrance. We carefully examine second-quality fabrics (seconds) and vintage materials, accepting those with minor flaws we can plan around.
This openness to all fabric types—from designer samples to inherited textiles—comes from 20+ years of real-world fabrication experience. We've developed expertise in fabric evaluation, creative design solutions, and strategic pattern placement that typical pillow services and general sewing workrooms simply don't offer. We combine thorough performance suitability assessment, economics-trained thinking, and yardage optimization techniques to recommend the best way to use your fabric—then transform it through intentional design and handcrafted fabrication into custom decorative pillows and other home furnishings your clients want.
We're rigorous and realistic about what's feasible with COM, especially when it comes to remnants, seconds, and vintage materials. If we advise against fabrication, we explain why and suggest alternatives—protecting your client relationship and your reputation.
We love seeing the materials our design partners select, confirming it's appropriate for your specific needs and helping you discover what's possible with it. Whether we're working with your fabric or ours, every project receives the same careful consideration, creativity, and craftsmanship—the high quality your clients expect.
What Makes Our Holistic Design Approach Different:
Consultation Over
Order-Taking
We don't just make what you ask for—we ask targeted questions that lead to better, more thoughtfully designed results.
- • Where will these pillows and home furnishings live?
- • How will they be used—display only, daily lounging, or high-traffic family use?
- • Who uses the space—kids, pets?
- • What colors, patterns, and textures already exist in the room—furniture, window treatments, artwork, and rugs?
These details significantly influence our recommendations. We prioritize real-world performance over aesthetics alone—navigating you from what looks good to what works best for your life. The goal: high-quality materials and design that combine the desire for luxury and beauty with the practical need for durability and pull your room together in a way that feels intentional and collected-over-time rather than assembled all at once.
Those targeted questions reveal what's missing or needs to change—and what to do about it. Whether you need:
- • adequate light control for a sun-drenched room
- • durable seating support for active families with pets
- • properly fitting bedding for a vacation home
- • colors and patterns that make a space feel authentically yours through major life transitions like becoming empty nesters, adding a second home, or downsizing
—we develop plans that enhance what you already have while addressing the challenges you're experiencing.

waste. Utilizing what your clients love is important to us.

Values
Investment-Focused Guidance
Our economics-trained thinking enables you to better advise clients on smart material investments. Rather than focusing solely on upfront costs, we give you the details to frame choices in terms of long-term value: enduring style, performance features, durability, expected lifespan, cost-per-year thinking.
This perspective helps your clients understand why a $250 performance fabric throw pillow that lasts 8+ years represents better value than a $75 ready-made option that needs replacement every 2 years—making your recommendations easier to justify and increasing client satisfaction long-term.
Comprehensive COM Evaluation
We assess all Customer's Own Materials—fabric, trims, drapery lining, pillow inserts, and foam—evaluating both condition and suitability for intended application. Our thorough COM inspection considers:
- • Hand-feel, fiber content, weight, drape
- • Durability (double rub counts) and technical features (stain-resistance,
moisture-resistance, fade-resistance)
- • Color, pattern, scale, texture, and style
- • Available yardage vs. fabrication requirements
- • Pattern placement possibilities and yield optimization
- • Whether supplementary materials are needed
- • Real-world performance for client's specific use case (where and how fabrics and fabricated pieces will be used)
We're rigorous about what's feasible, especially when it comes to remnants, seconds, and vintage materials. If we advise against fabrication, we explain why and suggest alternatives—this protects your client relationship, your reputation, and our ongoing partnership.
Trade-Level Communication
We understand design workflow and employ the professional communication you expect from a to-the-trade workroom partner. In addition to transparent timeline expectations, detailed quotes and invoices, we provide:
- • Fabric suitability evaluation—If what you provide isn’t well suited to your planned use, we advise what’s appropriate and feasible for your project and suggest alternative applications for your current material.
- • Fabric quality assessment with documentation—If any flaws or shipping damage are found, we supply photos and detailed documentation. We determine whether flaws can be worked around and discuss your comfort level with any needed adjustments to the plan.
- • Yardage maximizing solutions—Whether yardage is limited due to prohibitive fabric costs or remnant availability, intentional design extends what you have. Our techniques include well-planned pattern placement, pairing what you provide with complementary materials from our collection, size or style modifications,
and when needed, suggesting applications more in keeping with what’s available.
- • Proactive communication—If fabric quality issues arise during fabrication, we communicate them immediately with the same level of detail and documentation. We carefully calculate yardage requirements and verify the amount supplied meets those requirements prior to marking and cutting fabric—if yardage is short, we let you know immediately and discuss how to work with what we have or if supplemental yardage is needed.
Skilled Fabrication
Whether working with high-end designer fabrics, client-sourced materials, remnants, seconds or vintage textiles, we bring consistent attention to:
- • Pattern placement, pattern orientation, nap direction matching
- • Fabric yield optimization
- • Recommendations on when railroading fabric is beneficial
- • Construction quality and finishing details
Specialty Materials Handling
- • Adapted techniques for specialty materials (vintage textiles, furs, needlepoint, crewel embroidery, delicate compositions)
What Design Professionals Say About Our COM Services
"I work with several drapery workrooms and Melissa is the only fabricator I trust with Customer's Own Material (COM). She thinks strategically about materials and offers guidance that makes my job easier and my clients happier."
—Interior designer partner
"Melissa alerted me to subtle flaws in designer yardage I supplied. She notified me immediately and sent detailed photos of the flaws. She explained our options for how to work around the manufacturing defects and advised us to return the fabric. We opted to contact our supplier
to replace the flawed yardage—Melissa's photos and documentation made it easy to convince the store to send new material."
—Interior decorator partner
"My client has two great loves: cats and antiques—these are often at odds with each other. When building a pillow arrangement for a Duncan Phyfe sofa that we were reupholstering, Melissa helped
us select a subtle timeless cheetah print indoor-outdoor fabric with 50,000+ double rubs for the mahogany-framed settee and a selection of textures and
patterns to pair with it for accent throw pillows. My client couldn't believe the fabrics are fade- and stain-resistant and is thrilled that her cats can lounge in the afternoon sun without messing up her favorite antique sofa."

How to Start a COM or Custom Fabric Sourced Project:
Step-by-Step
Our streamlined fabrication and COM process protects your client relationships while ensuring high-quality results:
1. Initial Project Discussion and Consultation
Share project scope, material details (fabric, trim, lining, inserts and/or foam), and timeline needs. Photos and any design renderings are useful. We provide preliminary material assessment and guidance—often via email or phone before materials arrive in our studio.
Service availability:
Our full range of soft home furnishings fabrication is available for clients local to the NC Triad. Virtual consultation with selective services (primarily made-to-order pillows and select bedding items that ship well) is available nationwide.
Useful photos to share:
- • Your materials (fabric, trims, inserts, foam) showing pattern, texture, and any noteworthy features or flaws
- • Furniture or windows where items will be used
- • Current space showing existing décor, colors, and style
- • Adjoining rooms if coordinating across spaces
Local to NC Triad? Schedule a Discovery Meeting in our Greensboro studio to review your COM, discuss project scope, and explore our in-studio fabric collection.
2. Materials Submission
Ship or deliver your fabrics, trims, lining, inserts, and/or foam to our Greensboro studio.
Remote clients: we provide preliminary assessment to flag any potential issues early—before materials are shipped to us.
3. Thorough Holistic COM Assessment
We examine all materials in person, evaluating:
- • Fiber content, weight, drape, and hand-feel
- • Durability and performance characteristics for intended
use
- • Quality issues, flaws, or damage and whether any issues are workable
- • Available yardage vs. fabrication requirements
- • Pattern placement possibilities and yield optimization
- • Whether you need supplementary fabrics or trims to pair with what you already have
- • Condition and remaining lifespan of existing inserts or foam (if reusing)
4. Detailed COM Evaluation, Recommendations, & Quote
You receive:
- • Written assessment of materials with photos if issues are found
- • Fabric, trim, lining, insert or foam recommendations if supplementary materials are needed
- • Itemized quote with all fabrication details
- • Explanation of any special handling requirements or additional labor costs
- • Clear timeline expectations
We're straightforward and realistic about what's feasible with COM. If materials aren't appropriate for your intended use, we explain why and suggest alternatives (materials ideal for your use and other applications for your COM)—protecting your client relationship and ensuring project success.
5. Approval & Material Coordination
Once you approve the quote, any supplementary materials (fabric, trim, lining, inserts, foam) are sourced. All materials must be paid in full BEFORE fabrication begins. Whether you source independently or purchase through us—we ensure everything works together cohesively.
6. Professional Fabrication
All materials—regardless of source or value—receive the same attention to pattern placement, handcrafted construction, and detail-oriented
finishing. We understand the trust involved when utilizing materials that hold sentimental significance and handle them with care and respect. We communicate proactively if any issues arise during fabrication.
7. Completion & Delivery
Finished pieces are available for pickup at our Greensboro studio or shipped to your specified location. Pillows and select home furnishing items ship nationwide; larger pieces typically require local pickup or delivery.
Most fabrication begins within 1-3 weeks of receiving your deposit and all materials in our Greensboro studio. Actual timing depends on current workload and material availability. We'll include a timeline with your quote.

What to Know Before Starting a COM Project
COM Checklist: What to Consider Before Sending Fabric to Custom Workroom
We conduct thorough COM inspection once materials arrive in our studio.
Common issues to verify:
- • Correct pattern and colorway
- • Accurate yardage
- • Appropriate weight and hand-feel for intended use
- • Pattern direction vs. layout direction (layout direction to match direction of pattern on the roll or railroaded layout)
- • Side of fabric to be used (right side vs. wrong side)
- • Presence of visible flaws or damage—even first quality materials can have
imperfections that were missed during quality checks or damage that occurred in shipping
Why Fabric Quantity Matters for COM Projects
Sufficient yardage is essential. We need adequate fabric for your intended use plus allowances for seams, hems, pattern matching, and directional layouts where needed. If your yardage is on the borderline of what is needed, design options may be limited, however we have many techniques to make it possible to complete your project. Additional labor charges might accrue—but they're worth it to use fabric you and your client love.
We can calculate yardage requirements before you purchase fabric—contact us with details including what’s being made, pattern repeat if known, pattern and nap orientation (up the roll or railroaded), desired sizes and quantities. This prevents costly shortages, especially with directional prints, napped options like velvets and chenilles, or patterns requiring well-planned pattern placement and matching.
Fabric Condition: Fabric Suitability and Quality
Evaluation
First-quality materials, remnants, seconds, vintage textiles, and sentimental pieces your client wants honored are all welcome—provided they're clean and structurally sound.
We assess each for:
- • Cleanliness: Materials must be free from soil, stains, or odors. We do not accept soiled fabrics and do not offer cleaning, washing, or pre-shrinking services.
- • Structural integrity: Vintage textiles (including furs, needlepoint, crewel embroidery) and trims must be free from dry rot, severe sun damage, or deterioration.
- • Workable imperfections: Seconds with minor flaws (dye lot variations, printing errors, small weaving inconsistencies) can often be resourceful finds when flaws can be worked around with careful planning and pattern placement.
We examine all materials and determine feasibility.
What Materials Require Special Handling During
Fabrication
Certain materials require adapted construction techniques that may result in additional labor charges:
Specialty Materials:
- • Vintage textiles (furs, needlepoint, crewel embroidery)
- • Delicate or fragile compositions
- • Unusual material types (non-standard weights, unconventional fibers)
- • Previously used fabrics requiring preparation
High-Value Materials:
- • Designer fabrics with significant replacement cost
- • Irreplaceable or sentimental pieces
- • Materials requiring exceptional care to prevent damage
We assess special handling requirements during COM evaluation and explain any limitations, extra considerations, and associated costs in your quote before beginning fabrication.
Our Approach to COM Pricing
Unlike many workrooms, we don't charge cutting fees or handling fees simply for accepting Customer's Own Materials. Our fabrication labor rates are the same whether we're working with your fabric or ours—there's no markup just because you provide materials.
We only apply additional labor charges when projects require extra time due to material condition issues or fabrication complexity (detailed below).
When Additional Fabrication Charges Apply
Our base fabrication labor rates are the same whether we're working with your fabric or ours. However, certain material conditions and project requirements may incur additional labor charges.
Material Condition Issues:
- • Wrinkled or creased fabrics requiring significant ironing, steaming, or layout workarounds due to improper rolling, folding, or shipping damage
- • Repurposed (previously used) materials needing preparation—removing seams, hems, or old stitching and pressing
- • Materials with flaws, imperfections, or damage that need to be identified and cut or worked around—more common with remnants, seconds, or vintage textiles
- • Short or limited yardage that is on the borderline of what is needed requires more planning and creative techniques to complete your project
Fabrication Complexity:
- • Large-scale patterns requiring strategic placement to optimize yield
- • Pattern matching with large pattern repeats or intricate designs requiring precise alignment
- • Materials with directional nap or one-way patterns requiring specific layout orientation
- • Railroading requirements that impact yardage calculations and layout
- • Limited or borderline yardage requiring creative layout techniques to maximize yield
- • Fabrics with challenging behavior (excessive fraying, shifting, or stretching during construction)
- • Delicate or high-value materials requiring exceptional care and slower handling
- • Thin or lightweight fabrics requiring lining or underlining for proper opacity and stability
These factors are assessed during our thorough COM evaluation and clearly explained in your quote before fabrication begins. If any unforeseen issues arise during fabrication, we communicate them immediately and discuss the implications before continuing with fabrication.
Important Note on Material Insurance & Liability
While we handle all materials with professional care, we cannot be held liable for damage to Customer's Own Materials during assessment,
fabrication, or storage. We advise insuring valuable or irreplaceable materials before shipping or bringing them to our studio. This is industry-standard practice for COM services.
Additional Materials: You're Welcome to Supplement with Our Resources
If you need coordinating fabrics, trims, drapery lining, pillow inserts, or cushion foam, we source these through our in-studio collection and trade-level connections.
Pillow Inserts
Our choice for the best pillow inserts is based on your specific use—feather down (50/50, 30/70, 10/90, or 95/5), synthetic down alternative, or premium polyfill options.
If you're supplying your own inserts, we prefer having them in-studio to gauge suitability and sizing—especially important for unique dimensions or existing inserts your clients want to continue using where we need to consider the remaining lifespan.
→ See our Pillow Sizing &
Arrangement Guides as well as
our Pillow Insert Sizing and Pillow Insert Type guides.
Our pillow insert advice varies based on where and how your pillows will be used:
- • Hypoallergenic synthetic down alternative inserts are good for guest rooms, shared living spaces, or anyone preferring non-feather options
- • Feather down for most indoor use
- • Weather-resistant inserts with non-woven polyester covers and synthetic filler for outdoor use
You can purchase pillow inserts through us (online or in-studio) or source them yourself.
Cushion Foam
If you're supplying your own cushion foam—whether newly purchased or existing—we require foam to be in-studio. We assess suitability and sizing—especially important for unique dimensions or existing foam your client wants to continue using where we need to evaluate remaining lifespan. Having foam in-studio allows us to get the most precise fit when making custom cushion covers.
Our foam advice varies based on where the cushions are located and how often they will be used:
- • High-traffic seating needs firmer, denser foam
- • Occasional-use cushions can prioritize plush comfort
- • Outdoor applications require quick-dry open-cell foam
We provide foam assessment and recommendations. You can purchase cushion foam through us in-studio or source independently.
Lining for Window Treatments
Lining is essential for proper drape, light control, fade protection, and finished appearance. Our lining recommendations are based on window treatment type and function:
- • Standard or flannel backed lining for most applications
- • Blackout lining for bedrooms, home theaters, or light-sensitive spaces
- • Interlining for enhanced insulation, sound dampening, and luxury drape
You can drapery lining purchase through us in-studio or source independently.
Custom Throw Pillows and Other Home Furnishings
