Is an In-Home Consultation
Right for You?
An In-Home Consultation is a
good fit if any of these sound familiar:
✓ You need precise measurements of windows, a non-standard bed, built-in seating, or patio furniture
✓ You've already had a Discovery Meeting, Fabric Consultation, or design consultation and need on-site measuring or in-home fabric and design input to move your project forward
✓ You want to see fabric in your lighting, alongside your furniture and existing décor, before deciding
✓ You’re very visual and want an in-home Pillow Design Consultation with our pillow designer to style throw pillow combinations for your furniture—more than what a Personal Shopping Appointment, 24-Hour Approval, or Digital Mock-ups alone can show you
✓ You're coordinating multiple
elements—throw pillows, bedding, window treatments, seat cushions, and other furnishings—within a room or across connected spaces or adjoining rooms
✓ You have fabric, throw pillows, pillow covers, pillow inserts, bedding,
window treatments, seat cushions, or cushion foam you want evaluated—so you know what to keep, refresh, replace, or re-purpose
✓ Photos and video walkthroughs don't fully capture your space's layout, unique lighting, or scale issues
Still not sure?
If you haven’t done so already, Schedule a Discovery Meeting or Get in Touch—we'll help you figure out what's the right fit for your situation.

Is Professional In-Home Measuring Worth It?
DIY measuring often misses critical details like proper allowances for curtain hardware, determining fullness requirements for operational
vs. stationary panels, and increasing impact by hanging hardware high and wide to make your room look larger and more open. Incorrect measurements result in curtains that drag on the floor or hover awkwardly, while poor planning can block natural light unnecessarily or allow excessive light to leak around the edges of blackout curtains.
Professional measuring accounts for all these details and more. Our In-Home Consultation also evaluates fabric suitability for your specific usage patterns and allows us to see fabric selections in your lighting
alongside your furniture, décor, windows, and any nearby architectural features. When needed, we provide drapery hardware selection and installation suggestions that enhance both function and visual effect of your window treatments, whether you’re having us make custom curtains or opt to buy ready-made options.
Window treatments are just one example—DIY measuring for throw pillows, bedding, and seat cushions (whether for a chaise lounge on your patio or built-in furniture) often overlooks similar critical details that affect whether made-to-order pieces fit and work as desired.
Plenty of online resources can walk you through DIY measuring basics, and we're glad to answer quick measuring, fabric, and design questions by text or email. But there's a real difference between general advice and the hands-on, on-site evaluation we provide during an In-Home Consultation.
If you need more detailed planning than what we can cover during a
complimentary 30-minute Discovery Meeting, Schedule a Consultation.

When Do You Need an In-Home Consultation
Some projects benefit from professional measuring and in-home design consultation more than others. Here's when it typically makes the biggest difference:
Challenging Window Configurations:
Bay windows • windows in tight spaces, near corners or angled walls, or with unusual sizing or architectural details • multiple windows of differing sizes and/or across adjoining rooms needing coordinated treatments
Cushions for Built-In Furniture:
Window seat cushions • banquette seating • breakfast nook benches where precise fit is critical for both comfort and appearance
Unique Bedding Requirements:
Platform beds • antique bed frames • non-standard mattress sizes where traditional ready-made bedding and bed skirts don't fit properly
Here's when in-home fabric evaluation matters most:
Fabric Performance Assessment:
Sun-filled rooms • high-traffic areas • spaces affected by lifestyle and usage patterns (kids, pets, etc.) where fabric selection directly impacts performance and longevity
Fabric Suitability Evaluation:
When how material hangs • drapes • handles abrasion and pilling matters most and you need help choosing curtain-weight vs. upholstery-weight fabric or when you need help understanding napped fabrics like velvet • pattern direction • railroaded fabric and how each affects the finished look of your custom home furnishings.
Home Décor Planning:
Plans involving throw pillows • bedding • window treatments • seat cushions that need to work together cohesively with existing furnishings and décor
How to Start an In-Home Consultation: Step-by-Step
1. Share Your Project Needs, Ideas & Vision
Tell us what you have in mind—a mix and match throw pillow combination for your sofa, sectional, or bed, custom bedding or window treatments, breakfast nook seat cushions, or refreshing your open floor plan great room or outdoor living space.
• Share details about your situation—kids, pets, daily use patterns, entertaining style, sun exposure, functional issues you want to address (privacy, light control, and/or temperature regulation for drafty windows) and design challenges you have (what window treatments to use with windows of different sizes within the same room)
• Provide any timeline considerations for seasonal refreshes, entertaining, or upcoming events
→ Schedule In-Home Consultation—appointments available throughout Greensboro, Winston-Salem, High Point and surrounding areas in the
North Carolina Triad.
Preparing for Your In-Home Consultation
Gather inspirational decorating photos, fabric swatches, trim samples, your own fabrics or remnants you're considering, and any throw pillow inserts or cushion foam you already have. Paint sample chips for your wall colors and swatches for current furnishings are especially useful.
Sharing photos, short videos, and reference materials helps us see your space before we are in it—useful whether or not you have a Discovery Meeting first. Photos show scope, scale, and details that are difficult to describe in words. Short video walkthroughs that pan around your space—with or without your narration—give us a genuine, three-dimensional feel of the room and any adjoining rooms.
Sending Photos or Short Videos?—send photos and videos separately to melissa@melissacreechdesigns.com

2. Discovery Meeting, Fabric Consultation or Design Consultation
Start with our complimentary 30 minute Discovery Meeting at our Greensboro studio—hands-on fabric browsing, project discussion, and Customer's Own Material (COM) evaluation. This gives us an overview of your project before your In-Home Consultation, so we arrive
prepared with relevant fabric swatches and focused attention.
→ Curious, want to know what’s a studio visit actually like?

Some projects also benefit from a Fabric Consultation, Pillow Design Consultation, or Home Furnishings Design Consultation—we'll let you know if additional planning would be beneficial and what’s the right next step for you.
Preparing for your Discovery Meeting or in-person consultation?
→ See What to Bring to Your Discovery Meeting for a full list of what to send or bring—photos, fabric samples, paint colors, measurements, and materials you already have.
3. Fabric Selection & Materials Assessment—Your Fabric, Our Fabric, or Both
If you haven't already chosen materials, we'll help you determine what fabric is right for your use. Shop our designer fabric collection at our Greensboro studio during your Discovery Meeting, or if you don’t see what you need, our Fabric Consultation: Selection, Sourcing & Strategy provides full-service fabric curation and trade-level access.
→ See Step 3 of How to Start a Fabric Consultation: Step-by-Step for details on our fabric shopping and sourcing services.
Bring Your Own Fabric: Customer's Own Material (COM) Evaluation
Already have fabric or trim? We evaluate suitability, calculate yardage, and suggest coordinating materials when needed. For throw pillow inserts or cushion foam you provide, we assess suitability and fit. For any existing items you plan to continue using, we also consider the remaining lifespan.
Customer's Own Material (COM) evaluation happens during your Discovery Meeting or your In-Home Consultation.

4. In-Home Consultation
Measuring for Custom Home Furnishings
Precise measurements for custom window treatments including
drapery panels, café curtains, valances, cornices and faux Roman shades.
Accurate measurements for patio cushions, chaise lounges, window seat cushions, banquette seating, and dining chair covers.
Have a platform bed, adjustable mattress, antique bed, or a unique situation where ready-made and standard retail options never quite fit correctly? Correct measurements are key for custom duvet covers, bed skirts, Euro shams, decorative pillow shams, and statement lumbar pillows or bolster pillows sized to your bed and bedroom layout.
Design Consultation & Fabric Selection in Your Home
In addition to measuring whatever needs measuring, being in your home means you can show us your design challenges, and we can figure out solutions that fit how you live in the space. When you need real blackout capability that prevents light leaks and space is tight, we suggest ways to address that with options like custom-made blackout curtains and French return rods. When balancing color, mixing patterns, and creating style across open floor plans and adjacent rooms is needed, being able to see the layout of your home in-person is invaluable and allows us to see details that even photos and short walk-through videos have a hard time capturing.
We provide material recommendations—fabric, drapery lining, pillow inserts, and cushion foam—along with construction methods suited to your specific needs. That means family-friendly performance fabrics for high-traffic areas, indoor-outdoor fabrics for locations with strong sun exposure, or luxury designer materials for low-traffic spaces.
We also evaluate any throw pillows, bedding, window treatments, seat cushions, or other furnishings you're considering refreshing and suggest ways to enhance what you already have rather than starting over completely. Being in your space makes it possible to provide accurate sizing, quantity, and arrangement input so new or updated pieces integrate with your room rather than compete with it. When we’re working together and figuring out what to keep as-is, what’s worth a little refresh, and what needs to be replaced, clients are often surprised by how often the more sustainable choice is not only the most economical, but also what provides the most authentic
collected-over-time look. Rather than reupholstering a sofa, you might just
need a mix and match throw pillow combination. Other times, tired-looking dining chairs or patio furniture need new cushion foam and fabric instead of replacement. We provide straightforward direction about what’s possible and help you choose among and prioritize options.
→ Learn about our commitment to Thoughtful Design, Sustainable Values
Seasonal planning is part of the conversation too—weather-and fade-resistant cushions before summer entertaining, light-filtering window treatments or blackout curtains for better sleep, durable stain-resistant fabric ahead of holiday hosting. And because handcrafted pieces are a long-term investment and we practice conscious consumption and slow decorating, we talk through cost-per-year thinking and how to recognize higher-quality, made-to-last pieces vs. pieces that will need frequent replacing.
5. Material Sourcing
Fabrics, trims, and other materials are sold separately and are not included in consultation fees. We can handle all ordering and logistics or provide detailed sourcing information for you to purchase independently.
Want to know what to expect when you opt to have us source your chosen fabric, trim, pillow inserts, cushion foam, or drapery lining as part of our Fabric Consultation service?
→ See Steps 4 and 5 of How to Start a Fabric Consultation: Step-by-Step
Steps 6 through 8 apply to projects we're fabricating:
6. Design Planning & Transparent Pricing
Once sizing, construction details, and finishing options are confirmed, you'll receive itemized pricing for all materials and labor plus any
design and/or fabric consultation or material sourcing services and a timeline with your quote.
7. Fabrication—Handcrafted in Our Greensboro Studio
Most fabrication begins within 1-3 weeks of final design approval and receiving your deposit and all materials at our Greensboro studio—including Customer's Own Materials (COM) and any materials we source for you. Actual timing depends on current workload and material availability.
• Smaller projects (single items, pillow combinations, dining chair covers): typically 2-4 weeks
• Multi-element projects depend on scope: typically 4-8 weeks
• Rush services: Available when our schedule permits

What to Expect During Your In-Home Consultation
How an In-Home Consultation Works
Starting with a Discovery Meeting means your In-Home Consultation isn't a first introduction, it's a continuation of a conversation that's already started. So, when Melissa arrives, she's prepared with a preliminary plan and fabric swatches for any options selected during your studio visit. If you weren't able to schedule a Discovery Meeting beforehand, Melissa comes prepared based on the project details, photos, and any walk-through videos you shared when scheduling your consultation.
What an In-Home Consultation Actually Looks Like
You'll walk the space together and talk through how the space is used, what's not working, and what you're hoping to change. Measurements are taken of windows, beds, built-ins, patio furniture or whatever needs measuring.
We’ll consider any fabric options you already have as well as those we selected during your Discovery Meeting. You’ll see fabric swatches in your lighting, with your furniture and surrounding décor including wall color, artwork, and rugs. The combination of these elements determines how well colors show up and how textures blend and patterns mix.
Seeing fabric in your space is especially important since how a fabric looks in your lighting can read completely differently than how it appears online, in the fabric store, or in our studio. We assess this during our time together and encourage you to continue doing so over several days since it should be done not just at a single point in time but throughout the day and evening as the amount and quality of natural and artificial light in your space varies.
Still deciding? Purchase a sample yard rather than rely on a small fabric swatch alone—this is especially important anytime you’re unsure, as well as for sizeable yardage requirements, large patterns, and distinctive colors and textures.
If figuring out how to layer throw pillow combinations on your king bed, sofa or sectional is on the agenda, then Melissa brings throw pillow inserts and when possible, throw pillows or pillow covers. Together we’ll experiment with different sizes and throw pillow arrangements to determine what suits your furniture and how you use your space.
After an In-Home Consultation, most clients have a clearer sense of their project than they had beforehand. Plans get confirmed or possibly tweaked because seeing everything together in the room and in relation to any adjoining spaces reveals something that wasn't obvious previously. Occasionally, a project gets put on hold because during our time together we determine something else takes precedence, so priorities shift.

FAQs
A Discovery Meeting is a complimentary 30-minute appointment at our Greensboro studio. During this project-focused time we discuss design challenges and project ideas, explore fabric possibilities with suitability in
mind, and provide a quick Customer's Own Material (COM) evaluation of any
fabric you already have. This in-studio time gives you an idea of what we offer and how we work. For most NC Triad clients, it's the right starting
point—especially before an In-Home Consultation, since it gives us a chance to understand your project before we arrive.
An In-Home Measuring & Design Consultation brings our expertise directly into your space for professional measuring, on-site fabric
evaluation, and design direction. In-Home Consultations are billed at our
standard consultation rate with a one-hour minimum.
We have most clients start with a Discovery Meeting first, where we can get an overview of your project, functional and aesthetic concerns, along with fabric needs. This way our in-home time is a continuation of our in-studio conversation and we’re able to make the most of our time together since we likely will already have fabric swatches and some preliminary planning started.
Without a Discovery Meeting beforehand, we prepare our in-home
appointment using project details, photos, and any walk-through videos you provide when scheduling your consultation.

Many of our local clients also have second homes at the lake, beach, or in the mountains. If an on-site appointment isn't feasible for your home or vacation rental property, we can start with a Discovery Meeting at our Greensboro studio and continue remotely with fabric

When determining when to schedule, consider your project timeline. Are you wanting seasonal updates? Getting ready for holiday entertaining or a special event? We recommend scheduling 3-6 months in advance for any project with a firm timeline—material lead times vary and are outside our control once we move beyond materials and items that are in-stock at our Greensboro studio.
→ See How to Start a Fabric Consultation: Step-by-Step for
typical lead times by material type.
If your project has multiple elements being fabricated, intricate labor-intensive designs, and/or requires full upholstery capabilities beyond the services we offer then proactive planning is even more necessary since custom fabrication takes time.
Whether we’re handling fabrication or someone else is, getting started early means more scheduling flexibility, better material availability, and more control over your project timeline. Many clients begin mapping out their next project before their current one is finished to secure preferred timing—continuity between projects provides a more cohesive, intentional look. As we get to know your space and style, we’re often looking ahead to changes that might be needed or wanted as your home and style evolve, so there’s often another project on the list.
As a boutique studio, we accept a limited number of consultation bookings to ensure personalized attention for every client. As with Discovery Meetings, In-Home Consultation appointments are available Monday through Saturday. We encourage daytime appointments since natural light is best for viewing fabric options and the colors already in your space.

We understand schedules change. Please give us at least 24-hour notice for rescheduling whenever possible, so we can offer that time to another client.

Yes. We can schedule your In-Home Consultation before installation begins, once new windows or built-ins are in place, or whenever works best for your project. When you Schedule a Consultation, we ask you to provide 2-3 dates and times that work for you and to provide details on any timeline preferences you have, including a renovation schedule or upcoming events you're preparing for (seasonal updates, entertaining, life transitions). This allows us to plan timing around your renovation schedule.
We typically begin fabric selection at our Greensboro studio during your Discovery Meeting. Based on these selections, we bring fabric swatches with us to your In-Home Consultation.
Swatches are available for most fabrics (nominal fee applies) and can be ordered online or requested during your Discovery Meeting or consultation. Swatches aren't available for limited-availability fabrics, special-order materials, or when we have minimal yardage remaining. When swatches aren't possible, we provide color-matching alternatives like Sherwin-Williams paint color references.
While we’re on-site, we’ll test how fabric options hang, drape, and lay. When considering curtain fabric, we check how the material looks against your walls in various lighting conditions. With fabric for throw pillows, bedding, seat cushions, and upholstered pieces we lay or pin swatches on the pieces they will go on. We’ll rotate the swatch to see if you like the pattern better when it’s flipped 90 degrees (aka railroaded). We’ll also see how the impact of pattern scale and texture shifts when we look at fabric swatches from different angles and distances.
→ See “What an In-Home Consultation Actually Looks Like” in What to Expect During Your In-Home Consultation section above for details on how to evaluate fabric swatches and when to purchase a sample yard which can give you a better sense of scale, drape, and how the fabric will look in your room.
Whether you’re evaluating fabric swatches or a sample yard, live with them for a few days, observe them at different times to see how the color shifts throughout the day.
Want to see fabric selections in your space before deciding?
Our optional Digital Mock-ups service shows fabric and throw pillow
arrangement options in photos of your room.
Also see the FAQ below: “What
happens if I change my mind about fabric selections after you leave?”
Absolutely. We accept Customer's Own Material (COM) and Bring Your Own Fabric (BYOF) —whether it's new yardage, designer remnants,
leftover materials from previous projects, or vintage textiles with sentimental value. During your Discovery Meeting, we’ll do Customer's Own Material (COM)
evaluation and see what fabric we have in our Greensboro studio that coordinates with what you already have. If we don’t have what you need in-studio, our Fabric Consultation: Selection, Sourcing & Strategy service provides access to additional options beyond typical retail, including trade-level fabrics and trims through our High Point furniture market connections and trusted online resources.
Whether you only have limited yardage, are short on yardage, or just want to incorporate additional colors, patterns, or textures we excel at sourcing complementary materials and creating a unique designed-for-you aesthetic where the fabric mix looks hand-picked.

Our collaborative approach encourages questions and refinements. If you realize you want to go a different direction, Get in Touch and we’ll discuss other options. As long as materials have not been ordered and production hasn’t started, fabric changes can be easily made.
We're happy to discuss adjustments to your project before materials are ordered and fabrication begins. Changes to materials or design and construction specifications may affect pricing and timeline.
Given the final sale nature of nearly all home décor materials, changes to
materials—fabric, trim, pillow inserts, cushion foam, batting, drapery lining,
zippers, and other components—cannot be made once materials are ordered.
Once fabrication begins, we're unable to accept changes to materials, design, or construction specifications.
For the details of our policies please see our Return and Cancellation Policy.
With your quote, you’ll receive a Client Agreement that includes Changes to Your Project Before Fabrication Begins section that details our cancellation and change policy for custom fabrication.
You'll receive written specifications typically within 2-3 business days, including measurements, fabric recommendations, and clear next
steps. No pressure to proceed—our goal is providing the information you need to plan confidently.
If you're ready to move forward with us for fabrication, we'll confirm all material selections and provide a detailed fabrication quote.

With a Discovery Meeting prior to your In-Home Consultation, you gain access to our entire in-studio fabric, throw pillow, and pillow cover collection—it's the best way to select what you'd like to see in your own space during your In-Home Consultation.
Our online designer throw pillow collection represents a sampling of the hundreds of handcrafted throw pillows possible with our current in-house fabric collection—it really just gives you an idea of what we can make.
Our selective online throw pillow listings reflect our priority: exceptional fabric selection and intentional design for you and existing clients over rushing to list our entire inventory of possibilities online.
In-Home Consultation provides personalized service online ordering can't match—seeing fabrics in your lighting, ensuring precise
measurements for unique beds, windows, and seating, and coordinating multiple elements with your furnishings and décor.
Ordering online, whether ready-made, custom, or somewhere in between, is often convenient and easy, however there's nothing quite like having someone in your space doing the measuring, asking all the right questions, and giving you on-site decorating advice.
We're a design-first studio focused on making exactly what you need—often the best way to fully understand your needs and situation is by being in your home.
