finishing details on our designer throw pillows to fit your style & space

Customizable made-to-order designer throw pillows, Euro shams, pillow shams, lumbar pillows, and bolster pillows

  • • Found a designer throw pillow you love in our collection and need it in a different size or shape—a 24x24 inch throw pillow for your oversized sectional or a 12x20 inch lumbar pillow for that cozy reading chair?

  • • Have gorgeous wide tape trim you found to use as an inset border or a center vertical stripe on our linen or velvet throw pillows?

  • • Want to add piping to highlight your favorite color in a multi-color floral throw pillow you saw in our online designer throw pillow collection or during a Personal Shopping Appointment at our Greensboro studio?

As Greensboro's custom throw pillow maker and fabric strategist, we don't just execute the changes you request—we evaluate how your modifications affe•ct both the aesthetics and performance of your pillow before we make it.

>

Most fabric decisions happen in isolation—stores sell, designers select, workrooms sew. We do it all. We source, evaluate, design, and handcraft with every fabric we recommend.

This integrated approach delivers livable luxury—sophisticated materials and skilled construction that enhance how you actually live. We understand how modifications to our designer throw pillows affect both appearance and durability, so every change creates the look, feel, and functionality that fits your lifestyle—from everyday comfort and ease to elevated entertaining-ready styling.

Our 20+ years making custom throw pillows and other soft home furnishings for real homes with real families informs every customization decision—from which fabric swaps enhance the original design to which finishing details deliver both beauty and durability.

Want to incorporate your own fabric or trims? Whether using the tweed from your sofa as pillow backs, matching trim from your window treatments, or adding piping to highlight colors in your rug or artwork, we help you get the most from what you already have. This kind of customization results in throw pillows that are an authentic extension of your décor, not an add-on.

Our online throw pillow collection represents a sampling of the hundreds of handcrafted options possible with our current in-studio fabric collection. Found one or a grouping that catches your eye? We can change the size or shape, switch out the material used on the back side, or add finishing details—like your favorite wide tape trim. Your designer throw pillow can be the inspiration to build a throw pillow combination specifically for your room. Because nearly everything we make is made-to-order and you get to determine how we enhance it, you get exactly what you envision rather than settling for available mass-produced inventory.

We prioritize exceptional fabric selection and intentional design over rushing to list our entire inventory of possibilities online.

What Makes Our Throw Pillow Customization Process Different

We don't just make the changes you request—we evaluate how each modification affects design integrity, overall appearance, and durability which all impact its long-term value. Want to resize a chinoiserie pillow for your sofa, switch to a solid on the back side of a geometric selection, or add trim details to a textured chenille? We check the change against the original's proportions, functionality, and aesthetic balance first, so updates enhance rather than compromise the look and performance.

After designing thousands of custom throw pillows, we know which adjustments strengthen a design and which create unexpected challenges. Our fabric expertise means understanding how materials, sizing, and finishing details work together—so every modification delivers results you'll love for years.

Beyond Fabric Swaps, Simple Substitutions, or Trim Additions

Most throw pillow customization services focus on simple substitution or addition—swapping one material for another or adding finishing details like piping or trim. We provide fabric strategy: understanding what materials work where and why, based on 20+ years of real-world performance knowledge.

When answering "what fabric should I use for" questions, we consider:

  • • Whether your intended use, specific durability needs and lifestyle requirements—kids, pets, daily use patterns, and sun exposure—call for specific fabric capabilities and characteristics

  • • Whether the materials involved (yours or ours) can deliver the performance and durability your space needs—especially important in high-traffic everyday use areas where resistance to fading, stains, moisture, abrasion, and pilling really matters

  • • Whether any size or shape changes maintain aesthetically pleasing proportions and are consistent with the pattern scale and fabric weight

  • • Whether the fabrics and trims coordinate with your décor and overall decorating plans

If the throw pillow you want to alter, the refinements you want to make, or
your own fabric or trim doesn't fit well with your project and room, we'll
suggest alternatives that will.

Our fabric yield optimization, skilled pattern placement, and personalized fabric guidance ensure your modifications keep the quality and
appeal of the original design while meeting your specific needs.

Design Evaluation & Enhancement Planning

Clients ask us all the time: "Can you make this?" or "Can you change this?" Our answer is never just yes or no—it's a conversation about whether "this" gets you the results you want.

We evaluate your desired changes holistically—together with you—looking at whether the change achieves the look and comfort you want, not just whether it's technically possible, and whether a different approach might get you there more effectively than the one you initially asked for.

We're straightforward about what customization and throw pillow alterations are worth doing. Some changes deliver real impact; others
add expense or complexity without much noticeable payoff. And some throw pillows you already have are not suitable for alteration. When that's the case, we'll tell you, explain why, and point you toward options (other modifications or other throw pillows entirely) that provide significant results and lasting value.

Here's what this looks like in practice:

• Want to reduce the size or alter the shape of a large-scale abstract print
throw pillow?

→ We'll assess whether the pattern scale is appropriate for the smaller size or translates well as a lumbar or bolster pillow, or suggest an alternative.

• Planning to add trim to a throw pillow that already has significant detail?

→ We'll discuss trim placement that enhances rather than overwhelms the original design.

• Found the ideal pattern or color but need performance or outdoor fabric?

→ We'll identify a similar-looking performance or indoor-outdoor option, or point you to Custom Throw Pillows Made with Your Fabric or Ours for a fully custom build.

This is what holistic evaluation means in practice—not an automatic yes to whatever's technically possible, but a real conversation about what will work best for your space.

Our customizable designer throw pillow service isn't focused on making every possible change—it's about identifying the modifications that will actually deliver what you need. That discipline is part of why clients keep referring us to friends and family as well as why clients keep coming back to us for pillow after pillow, project after project, over years.

How Our Throw Pillow Customization Process Works

Choosing the right fabric for throw pillows, determining the edge treatment, and any other construction options like whether to add decorative trim, as well as what type of throw pillow insert to use are based on where your pillows will live, who uses the space, and how the pillow fabric needs to perform.

Considering a luxury fabric substitution or intricate finishing detail for a throw pillow that will get everyday use? We'll discuss where more delicate fabrics and trims hold up and where they won't. Occasional-use spaces like guest bedrooms and formal living rooms are ideal for luxury materials and intricate details, while frequently used throw pillows wear better with performance fabrics and simpler construction.

Even adding performance fabric to the back side can improve how long a throw pillow maintains its original appearance. Similarly, in some sunny indoor spots like window seats, you may be able to get away with just using outdoor fabric on the back side of pillows. However, fade-resistant fabric and trims are best for any indoor location with significant sun exposure and are a must have for any outdoor throw pillows.

Important distinction:
Customize Our Pillow Designs excels at material swaps, piping, and finishing details. When you need full performance or outdoor capabilities rather than a partial fabric swap, shop our performance throw pillow cover collection or outdoor throw pillow cover collection and browse performance and outdoor throw pillows at our Greensboro studio. Through our Custom Throw Pillows Made with Your Fabric or Ours service, we make throw pillows with whatever performance capabilities and durability you need from stain-resistance and UV protection for fade-resistance to high double rub counts for high traffic areas.

Throw Pillow Edge Treatments & Decorative Trim Additions

Many throw pillows in our collection are shown with a simple knife edge. Boxed corners and edge treatments like ¼" flanges or piping provide enhanced structure and shape definition. Piping (also known as cording or welting) adds an opportunity to incorporate complementary colors and textures,
while a small flange provides similar structural benefits without introducing additional colors, patterns, or fuss.

Whether your style tends towards refined and traditional or ornate and over the top there are multiple ways to add extra decorative elements and embellishments to one of our made-to-order customizable throw pillows.

Common Throw Pillow Edge Treatments

• Knife Edge: Two pieces of fabric are sewn together at a simple, flat seam with no extra trim or adornment. The sharp corners create a clean, contemporary look.

• Flange Edge: A flat border of extra fabric extends out past the main seam at the pillow edge on all sides. The size of the flange and whether it is made by top-stitching the pillow fabric or by adding a strip of material (either the same as the main fabric or in a contrasting color or pattern) determines the finished look. ¼" flanges provide a similar structured look like that achieved with piping, while wider flanges like 2” flanges common on bed shams creates a soft, framed look.

  • Split flanges use two separate pieces of fabric to create more volume and provide additional contrast.

  • Butterfly flanges or Turkish corners are flanges that form pleats at the corners for a refined finish.

  • Pleated, ruffle, or ruched flanges provide a formal decorative look or a soft, playful touch depending on the materials used.

• Corded, Welted, or Piped Edge: A thin fabric-covered cord (or piping) is sewn right into the outer seam. Self-piping (self-cording or self-welting) uses the same fabric as the pillow, while contrast piping (contrast cording or contrast welting) uses a different fabric. It adds structure, shape, and a traditional tailored finish.

• Box Edge: A separate band of fabric goes all the way around the sides between the front and back panels. It gives the pillow flat sides and a crisp, tailored shape—plump and structured, more like a small standalone cushion than a flat pillow.

  • Boxed corners create a three-dimensional, cube-like depth. Boxed corner pillows do not include separate side panels (boxing strips), like those with a box edge.

• Trimmed Edge: Decorative trim including banded trims, trim tapes, gimp, braids, fringes (including brush, tassels and pom-pom) are sewn into the seam or around the perimeter.

  • • Trims of all sizes and styles can be added to the pillow front (and back), edge, or flange.

Choosing the right throw pillow insert depends on intended function and use—we aim to maximize comfort and minimize the need for frequent fluffing.

  • • Frequently used great room or master bedroom throw pillows often need different insert density than rarely used designer accent pillows in more formal or occasional spaces like sitting rooms or guest bedrooms.

    • Outdoor use requires inserts with non-woven polyester covers and synthetic filler.

    • Decorative throw pillows in guest bedrooms and other spaces where guests with allergies spend time benefit from synthetic down alternative hypoallergenic inserts—learn about our favorites in our Throw Pillow Insert Type Guide.

Premium quality plump inserts provide that coveted high-end designer appearance, hold a karate chop beautifully, and let you sink in while still feeling supported. We typically recommend inserts 2 to 4 inches larger than the throw pillow cover—see our Throw Pillow Cover & Insert Sizing Recommendations as well as our Throw Pillow Insert Sizing Guide. Along with our curated fabric, throw pillow, and pillow cover collection, we keep a generous supply of inserts in varying sizes and fill types in our Greensboro studio so you can test the comfort and support of each type in person.

Already have fabric, trim, or throw pillows you love?

Whether we’re:

  • • Starting from scratch and making fully custom throw pillows with materials you provide

  • • Transforming our existing designs into one-of-a-kind throw pillows using your own fabric or trim

  • • Modifying the size/shape or adding finishing details on throw pillows you purchased elsewhere or previously had custom-made

we start by discussing what’s possible with what you have.

Whether you purchased yardage elsewhere, designed fabric yourself and had it custom printed, found designer remnants, have leftover yardage from previous projects, or inherited treasured textiles, you can ship or bring your fabric to our studio. We assess all customer supplied fabric, trims, and throw pillows holistically and guide you to options that showcase what you have while ensuring it performs well for your intended use.

Browse our online designer throw pillow collection or visit our Greensboro studio to see which of our current styles will work with your materials. Your fabric can be used on the front or back side, as contrasting piping, or as a custom-made fabric border on our designer throw pillows.* Placement options for any trim you provide are determined by the yardage you have and the desired look you’re wanting to achieve. And if you’re sending or bringing a throw pillow for alteration, we have fabric, trim, and pillow insert options you can see while in-studio or through virtual access in a Pillow Design Consultation.

* Using customer supplied fabric on both sides of a throw pillow is considered a fully custom project not a customization. Regardless of what we call it, we’re happy to make whatever you need. Learn about Custom Throw Pillows Made with Your Fabric or Ours.

Local clients can get a quick Customer’s Own Material (COM) evaluation during a Discovery Meeting or Personal Shopping Appointment at our Greensboro studio. Our favorite ways to integrate Customer's Own Materials (COM) into our customizable designer throw pillows include these sustainable, conscious-consumption-minded options:

  • • Using fabric leftover from drapery or upholstery projects as pillow backs or piping to provide a styled together look

  • • Highlighting designer remnant trim you bring us as a vertical center stripe on an in-stock lumbar pillow or made-to-order extra-long lumbar pillow or as an inset border on sofa throw pillows or Euro shams for a king bed

  • • Honoring sentimental materials or vintage textiles as pillow fronts on one of our lush velvet or chenille throw pillows

  • • Making one-of-a-kind throw pillows using a treasured piece of fabric as part of a pieced or color-block design with one of our high-end linen throw pillows

  • • Reworking throw pillow covers you love but want to use in another way

How Can Our Throw Pillows Be Customized?

Customization Options & Style Tweaks

Should you alter the size, switch out materials, add finishing details, or combine multiple modifications? We help you determine the most effective approach based on the specific fabrics and/or trims involved, your furniture scale, existing décor, your preferences, and how you actually use your space. We know how to customize throw pillows—yours or ours—so they look like they were designed specifically for your room.

Common Alteration Requests:

  • • Size and shape adjustments—enlarge or reduce while maintaining an attractive pattern placement (square, lumbar pillow, or bolster pillow)

  • • Fabric substitutions—luxury material swaps, highlighting specific colors, switching out what’s on the front or back side

  • • Finishing detail additions—piping, flanges, boxed corners, tape trim applications

  • • Combining modifications—multiple tweaks that work together for optimal results

Real-World Use Assessment

Your throw pillow's intended location and use drive our recommendations. Adding decorative trim to everyday-use throw pillows on a great room sectional where kids and pets play calls for different choices than adding that same trim to rarely used accent pillows on a settee in a guest bedroom.

Fabric characteristics matter too. Heavy upholstery-weight fabrics can overwhelm smaller lumbar pillows or create bulky seams, while lightweight materials may not provide enough structure for larger Euro shams or extra-long lumbar pillows or bolster pillows. And pattern scale affects what size changes are possible—a large-scale print that looks amazing at 22x22 inch may lose impact or look cut off when scaled down to 18x18 inch or to a 12x20 inch lumbar pillow, while a subtle or small-scale pattern can disappear on an oversized 26x26 or 30x30 inch Euro.

How to Choose Throw Pillow Size & Shape Adjustments

Square size adjustments offer significant versatility. Our most popular square pillow size, 20x20 inch, is best for mixing and matching on coveted high-end look for sofas, sectionals, and oversized chairs, and layers well on beds of any size.

  • • Switching to 26x26, 28x28, or 30x30 inch Euro sham sizing works well for beds (one for twin, two for full/queen, three for king) as well as some of today's larger sofas and sectionals.

  • • Scaling down to 18x18 inch creates the right proportions for smaller chairs and loveseats.

Lumbar pillows provide both back support and sophisticated styling—our go-to 14x20 inch size offers flexibility for most applications and pairs nicely with 20x20 inch or 22x22 inch on sofas & sectionals.

  • • Customizing means you can increase the height and/or width slightly to provide the right proportions for longer or deeper sofas and sectionals or decrease the scale for loveseats and chairs as needed.

  • • Changing to 12x36, 14x36, or 16x48 extra-long lumbar pillows makes a statement on beds, benches, wide sofas, and settees.

  • • Going down to 12x18 inch fits narrow chairs.

Lumbar pillows (and many square options) can often be made as bolster pillows, adding an appealing structural dimension to beds, benches, and seating areas. 8x22 and 14x48 inch bolster pillows layer with Euro shams and/or traditional decorative pillow shams and can be standalone designer accent pillows on benches, banquettes, settees, chaise lounges.

Throw pillows and pillow covers are available in standard or made-to-order sizes to fit your specific furniture and needs—the sizes possible depend on the pillow design you're starting with.

Where Can You Use Customizable Throw Pillows?

Whether you need to:

  • • Enlarge one of our popular 20x20 inch throw pillows for an oversized sectional

  • • Scale down a standard 14x20 inch lumbar pillow for a loveseat or chair

  • • Tweak the materials to coordinate with your sofa, rug, artwork, etc.

we evaluate every change against your furniture's scale and your existing décor before we make it—see What Makes Our Throw Pillow Customization Process Differentsection above.

Regardless of the furniture you’re focusing on, we don't just make individual pillows—we build mix and match throw pillow combinations. Whether you’re modifying a single pillow or a layered throw pillow arrangement for a sofa, our goal is to create consistent styling across all the pillows in your space—new customizable throw pillow additions and any throw pillows you already have and plan to continue using. We understand the proportion, color balance, and pattern-and-texture mixing that make a group of throw pillows read as an intentional arrangement rather than a random collection.

We value thoughtful design over buying all-new: well-chosen tweaks to our throw pillows can tie your whole room together without replacing what's already working.

Popular refinement requests: size alterations that maintain proper proportions; fabric swaps, contrasting piping, or custom-made fabric borders that pull colors from artwork or rugs; and trim additions that complement window treatments or furniture details.

Not sure how many throw pillows to use or what size is best?

Tailor our customizable designer throw pillows to coordinate with your bedding, window treatments, or overall color story. Adapt listed or displayed options into Euro shams, decorative pillow shams, lumbar pillows, or bolster pillows that fit your vision and décor. Beyond size and shape changes, we can incorporate materials from your bedding, window treatments, or any throw pillows you plan to continue using—as pillow fronts or backs, borders, or piping. Love the trim on your blackout curtains? We can add that same trim or similar trim to a statement bolster pillow or lumbar pillow—our linens, velvets or chenilles are ideal for this.

Bolster Pillows for Added Dimension:
Our made-to-order decorative bolster pillows add structure and decorator level sophistication to beds, benches, and
sofas. Available with fiber or feather inserts, these custom accent pillows provide versatile styling options—stunning as standalone statement pieces or layered with other pillows for distinctive arrangements.

Wondering how many pillows to use on a king bed—3 Euros, 2 king shams, and a lumbar or bolster pillow is a classic starting point, though
the right combination depends on your bed and personal style. Whether you want a minimalist 3-pillow look or a layered, luxe hotel-style arrangement, we help you choose the right throw pillow sizes and quantities for your bed.

Pro Tip: Test colors, patterns, and textures with customized throw pillows before deciding to use them on additional pieces like custom throw pillows, duvet covers, curtains, seat cushions, or upholstered furniture. Many clients prefer
this tactic and appreciate how we practice slow decorating—focusing on investment in fewer, higher-quality pieces made to last rather than encouraging you to buy pieces that will need frequent replacing.

Tweak one of our designs for a look that's tailor-made for your front porch bench, deck chairs, outdoor sofa, or poolside chaise lounge. Our outdoor throw pillows are made with fade- and weather-resistant fabric and durable construction techniques suitable for balconies, patios, and other outdoor living spaces.

Mountain, lake, and beach homeowners appreciate our understanding of how different climates affect construction requirements for outdoor throw pillows as well as indoor throw pillows in high-use situations like vacation rental properties and hot, humid environments where mold and mildew can be an issue even indoors. Our go-to outdoor lines, Sunbrella and
Thibaut InsideOut, are sophisticated and comfortable enough that many clients use them throughout their home and vacation home wherever they need fade resistance for strong sun exposure, stain resistance, or easy cleaning.

See "Performance & Throw Pillow Construction Considerations" section above for how we handle fade-resistant and performance fabric substitutions in our customizable designer throw pillows, and when having us make custom throw pillows with your outdoor or performance fabric or ours is a better solution than modifying an option that doesn’t provide the UV protection, stain-resistance, and/or durability you need.

Tweak our designs for easy seasonal pillow swaps—switch out fabric or trims to highlight specific colors or to introduce new colors, patterns, or textures while maintaining the proportions and styling details you love. Transform your space seasonally by rotating throw pillow covers and continuing to use your favorite comfortable inserts. This is an easy, cost-effective way to change the look and feel of your room throughout the year—and pillow covers take up less storage space than extra pillows. See Pro Tip below on how to store seasonal throw pillow covers.

Well timed changes: Many clients order throw pillow cover combinations to change out seasonally—lighter materials and colorways for spring and summer, deeper hues and lush textures for fall and winter.

We can make our established styles or any throw pillows you already have more seasonally appropriate for the look you're creating:

  • • Change the fabric on the back side to alter the overall aesthetic—use a linen in a light color or a velvet, chenille, or bouclé in a rich color

  • • Switch the fabric on the front to a similar print with more vibrant or muted tones or the same pattern in a different colorway, while keeping the same material on the back side

  • • Enhance the vibe with different piping colors or texture

  • • Add tape trim detailing that provides the mood shift you want to capture

And if you really love our original designs we can make summer and winter versions for you, so you have continuity throughout the year with subtle or not so subtle seasonal variety.

While customizing our throw pillows or yours is an option, another way to change up the mood of a room is by seasonally swapping out any neutral or solid throw pillows in your throw pillow arrangement. In warmer months focus on light and bright colors and linen fabric or less heavily textured woven materials. When the temperature drops and you’re inside more, use rich tones and add more texture with velvet, chenille, bouclé, or faux fur.

Pro Tip: How you store seasonal throw pillow covers matters. Store throw pillow covers flat rather than folded—many home décor fabrics and trims are challenging to iron or steam and are easily damaged by doing so. Be careful with velvet, chenille, bouclé, and faux fur especially, since these napped fabrics bruise and wrinkle easily and are prone
to damage from pressure marks, creases, and folds.

How Much Do Customizable Throw Pillows Cost

Understanding what throw pillow customization costs is about
more than the price of a single modification. Our economics-trained thinking reframes the question from "how much does this cost?" to "what
changes deliver the most value for how you will actually use this pillow?"
Whether you're staying within a focused budget or ready to splurge on high-end materials, by assisting you in sorting through what matters most to you versus what initially catches your eye we help you decide which alterations are worth making and which aren't. While discussing throw pillow options and
customization tweaks we also consider how changes can solve any design challenges or comfort issues you’re experiencing.

Long-Term Value:
Cost-Per-Year Thinking

Handcrafted throw pillows typically last 8-10 years with proper care and
quality inserts, while mass-produced alternatives need replacing every 2-3
years. This cost-per-year thinking shows you where your home décor spending goes furthest—a $250 throw pillow with high-end flat braid trim and performance velvet fabric that lasts 8+ years without showing wear costs about the same annually as a $60 pillow that needs replacing every 2 years.

Strategic Use of High-End Materials

Love a high-end designer pillow in our collection but want a more attainable
price point? Customization is how we make that happen—we keep the luxury fabric on the front while switching to a more accessible option (yours or ours) for the back and any piping. A similar tactic can be utilized by switching from a square to a lumbar pillow: the rectangular shape typically needs less yardage, so you get a distinctive look while using less of the higher-cost material. This lets
you keep the designer look where you'll see it most, while being thoughtful about where your home décor spending goes.

Want to go the other direction and elevate a throw pillow you already love? Use the same or a coordinating high-end fabric on the back, add contrasting piping, or introduce a statement flat braid trim from Kravet, Schumacher, or other popular high-end brands. Small, targeted upgrades like these can transform a throw pillow's whole presence without requiring starting from scratch with fully custom throw pillows made especially for you.

We can make throw pillow style upgrades and alterations on throw pillows you purchased elsewhere or previously had custom-made. A tweak like adding a center vertical stripe of a wide tape trim—like a Greek key tape from Thibaut—can refresh throw pillows you already have. Despite the service name, we don’t limit this service to throw pillows you find while shopping at our Greensboro studio or while browsing our online designer throw
pillow cover collection
.

Already Have Fabric You Want to Use?

Incorporating your own fabric, remnants, or vintage textiles into any project often costs less than sourcing new high-end yardage.

Using Customer's Own Materials (COM) allows us to make throw pillows that you have more of a personal connection with and creates a collected-over-time rather than purchased all at once look—aligning with our commitment to conscious consumption and slow decorating principles. Well-chosen materials and modification options mean your customized throw pillows should
outlast your color, pattern, and style choices—you'll be ready for a change and new look before your fabric is.

Most options in our online designer throw pillow cover collection and available at our Greensboro studio can be tailored to your unique needs, décor, and design goals through changing the size, fabric, and/or finishing details.

Found throw pillows or pillow covers in our collection or elsewhere that you want to have us customize? We'll let you know what tweaks are possible for your selections. Yes—we offer three options depending on how much customization you want:

1. Shop Our Made-to-Order Throw Pillow Collection:
Browse online pillow covers
or visit our Greensboro studio to see curated throw pillow designs and experiment with throw pillow combinations and arrangement options. Purchase exactly as shown.

2. Customize Our Pillow Designs (Semi-Custom):
Start with a pillow from our collection
and modify it— use different fabric on the back or front, adjust the sizing, add coordinated piping, or change the finishing details. This "custom pillows
but easy" method gives you thoughtful design without starting from scratch—see modification options in How Can Our Throw Pillows Be Customized? section above.

3. Fully Custom:

Product listings in online designer throw pillow cover collection show selected size and style options for each throw pillow cover. You can purchase our made-to-order throw pillows exactly as shown, or use Customize Our Pillow Designs to access additional sizing, fabric, and finishing options for a semi-custom throw pillow.

Customize Our Pillow Designs provides a much wider range of styling opportunities:

  • • size adjustments (from standard dimensions to oversized statement pieces like extra-long lumbar pillows for king beds)

  • • fabric combinations (swap materials used on the back side or front to alter the look and even incorporate your own fabric)

  • • finishing details: self-piping, contrasting piping, flanges, boxed edges and corners, and finishing details like decorative tape trim placed exactly where you want it.

This delivers precisely what your space needs while keeping our online shopping experience streamlined.

See modification options in How Can Our Throw Pillows Be Customized? section above.

Changing fabric on one side of a throw pillow—front or back—is a modification to an existing design. Changing both sides means we're making a new throw pillow from scratch, which is why it falls under Custom Throw Pillows Made with Your Fabric or Ours rather than Customize Our Pillow Designs. The distinction isn't just about what we call the service—it's that changing the material on one side of an established design takes less time and involves fewer fabric decisions as well as less design evaluation than what we provide when designing a fully custom throw pillow.

We do both. On this page we walk you through how to use Customize Our Pillow Designs service. Whether you want to use our throw pillows or have throw pillows of your own, we can modify them with size changes, a fabric swap on one side, new trim or piping. Through Custom Throw Pillows Made with Your Fabric or Ours we make throw pillows from scratch—you can leave all the details to us or be involved as much as you want to be in all design aspects from sizing and styling to fabric and trim.

If you love one of our designs and just want it sized or finished differently, customization is usually faster and more affordable. If you have an original vision not captured by any of our throw pillow options, or want changes extensive enough to essentially redesign the piece, fully custom is the better fit.

Yes. Despite the service name, we don't limit customization to pillows purchased from us—we can modify throw pillows you bought elsewhere, inherited, or had custom-made previously. We evaluate the pillow's construction alongside your desired changes to determine the best approach.

This is one of the ways we're different from typical online throw pillow shops: most only let you customize selections from their own catalog. We enjoy helping you get more life and function out of throw pillows you already love.

→ SeeHow Much Do Customizable Throw Pillows Cost

Our lead time is typically 1-3 weeks and fluctuates with order volume. Most projects take 2-4 weeks from final approval of all modifications being made to completion. The timeline for Customer's Own Material (COM) projects and projects where we're sourcing materials begins once we receive all items in our studio.

Rush services are available when our schedule permits.

Cost depends entirely on what modifications are made. Swapping the fabric on one side—front or back—is often one of the simpler changes, though the exact cost depends on the materials involved. To make a luxury designer throw pillow more attainable, we can use a more accessible fabric or fabric you provide on the back side. Found a throw pillow with a plain linen on the backside—want to give it a more elevated look? We can make it a double-sided throw pillow and use the same fabric on the front and back or swap the plain back out for a higher-end fabric like a designer print or plush multicolored tweed.
→ See “Strategic Use of High-End Materials” in the "How Much Do Customizable Throw Pillows Cost section above.

Combining multiple changes—like switching from a knife edge to a box edge with custom-made trim and banded tape detailing—requires more labor and materials, so it costs more.

We provide itemized, transparent pricing for every project, so you know exactly what you're paying for and why.

Yes—most of our designs can be sized up or down beyond the sizing options listed online or shown in-studio, from standard dimensions to oversized statement pieces like extra-long lumbar pillows for king beds.

Absolutely. Share your specifications in your throw pillow customization request. Whether you want a specific motif centered, need the pattern oriented a certain way, or want the front and back pattern placement the same or varied, we'll work with you to achieve your vision.
Request Quote

Yes! When ordering multiple pillows in the same fabric, let us know if you need identical pattern captures or want to have the pattern placement varied in any specific way across your throw pillows. This is especially important for directional patterns, large-scale motifs, or when creating symmetrical throw pillow arrangements. Ordering all throw pillows in a set at the same time means we can cut everything from the same bolt and thus have consistent dye lots.

Share any pattern placement specifications in your throw pillow customization request.

We strongly recommend it. Ordering together increases the likelihood that we can cut from the same bolt and not have any dye lot issues (colors can vary slightly between production runs) and use the same exact materials for the back side and/or piping. If you need identical pattern placement across multiple throw pillows, ordering simultaneously ensures pattern placement is truly identical and allows us to plan cuts for optimal yield.

If ordering all pillows at once isn't feasible, Get in Touch—we'll discuss options for achieving the best possible results.

Yes—we suggest options that enhance what you already have rather than starting over completely. An outside opinion is useful when you’re figuring out what to keep as-is, what’s worth a
little refresh, and what needs to be replaced. SeeWhere Can You Use Customizable Throw Pillows? section above for how we do this, whether you're updating throw pillows for your sofa, refreshing your bedroom, getting an outdoor space summer-ready, or making an easy seasonal swap.
