What Makes Shopping in Our Greensboro Studio Different

Shopping for throw pillows online or in a retail setting puts all the decisions on you. You browse what's available, make your best guess about what will work, and hope it looks right when it arrives or you get it home. If you're choosing fabric for made-to-order or custom throw pillows, you're evaluating swatches on an electronic screen or in store lighting and reading manufacturer descriptions. It can be frustrating trying to imagine how a pattern will look as a 20x20 inch pillow on your sofa or a 14x20 inch pillow in your favorite reading chair and how it will coordinate with your existing décor.

In-studio shopping works differently—because the studio itself is different.

When you visit our Greensboro studio, you're walking into a working design studio where every throw pillow and pillow cover was designed and handcrafted here—and where the person who made them is beside you recommending options specifically for your space. This changes the quality of your shopping experience and every selection you make.

Before pulling pillows, fabrics, and trims for you, we ask:

  • • Where will these pillows live?

  • • How often will they be used?

  • • Who uses the space?

  • • What colors, patterns, and textures already exist in the room — in furniture, window treatments, artwork, and rugs?

Your answers to these questions determine recommendations
for fabric, pillow sizing and finishing details, pillow insert types, how many pillows to use and where, and how to layer throw pillow combinations for a cohesive arrangement.

These are questions that a retail store or online shop likely never asks—and perhaps never considers the impact different answers have while designing or selecting their pillow collection.

Our studio is one of the few places in Greensboro where you can shop decorative throw pillows and designer fabrics in person. Several stores like Aubrey Home and fabric retailers that once served the NC Triad closed in recent years. We offer one-on-one throw pillow styling sessions by appointment at our Greensboro studiohands-on designer advice on pillow sizing, fabric selection, and how to arrange throw pillows to work well for both comfort and your décor. With us, you're shopping with our pillow designer—someone who understands how materials actually perform from 20+ years of making thousands of throw pillows and other soft home furnishings. In addition to knowing how to mix fabrics and layer patterns and textures, we know what choices clients are still grateful for years later.

We encourage clients to use throw pillows as a way to try colors, patterns, and different fabric types. If a material works well for you in pillows, then consider it or something similar for a duvet cover, blackout curtains, seat cushions, or an upholstered piece. Many personal shopping clients arrive with a particular pillow or fabric need and leave with a clearer vision for that project as well as ideas for what comes next in that space or even in another space.

Being in our studio, with so many options in front of you and having focused conversation with someone who sources, evaluates, designs, and handcrafts with every material she recommends changes the quality of selections you are offered and the decisions you make. You'll leave with a stronger sense of what you want and confidence that it will work in your home.

Customer's Own Material (COM) Evaluation

Knowing what we can make with any materials you already have allows for better planning. We'll discuss your options so you can make confident decisions. We make custom throw pillows, bedding, window treatments, and seat cushions with fabric you provide.

Learn about:

Understanding your options in the planning stage is key if your yardage is limited for any reason—as is the case for remnants, many seconds (second-quality fabrics), discontinued materials, or fabric
that is not re-orderable due to prohibitive cost or high minimum order requirements.

PRO TIP:

Home décor fabrics at discount retailers or online clearance sales are often simply discontinued patterns or overstock—not seconds. Always verify quality level and ask about return policies before buying.

Customer’s Own Material (COM) evaluation:

Fabric quality evaluation matters regardless of material type—first-quality yardage, remnants, and seconds all require assessment. First-quality fabrics can have imperfections missed during quality control or damage from transit. We evaluate all materials before fabrication begins.

What to Bring to Your Personal Shopping Appointment

Below is a list of what to bring with you when you visit our Greensboro studio.

The most important thing on the list is photos. Bring relevant photos—even better send them to us prior to your appointment. Photos are invaluable for understanding scope, scale, and details that are difficult to describe in words.

Tell us what you have in mind and when you can, show us with photos or even a simple hand-drawn sketch. Share details about your current décor and functional needs—kids, pets, daily use patterns and sun exposure.

The more context you provide, the more useful our time together will be. That said, don't let an incomplete list stop you from scheduling—many clients arrive with just photos and questions and leave with a designer-selected throw pillow combination that fits their furniture and blends with their existing décor.

Reference materials—help us see your space:

  • • Photos of your space from multiple angles, capturing existing furnishings, and décor elements (including window treatments, rugs, and artwork)

  • • Photos of specific furniture pieces needing throw pillows

  • • • • Straight-on shots

  • • • • Up-close shots showing relevant details

  • • Photos of adjoining rooms if you're wanting to create a cohesive look across open floor plans or connected spaces

  • • Paint color references, fabric swatches, or trim samples from existing décor

  • • Anything that shows the colors, patterns, and textures in your space — a throw pillow, cushion, arm cover, drapery tieback, or even a piece of artwork. Clients have brought faux florals, blankets, and pieces of clothing that went with the colors in their room. If it captures your color story, bring it.

  • • Measurements if you have them—beneficial but not required

  • • • • Furniture dimensions (sofas, beds, seating)

  • • • • Even approximate dimensions are better than none. Final quotes require exact measurements.

  • • Inspirational photos if you have them—Pinterest saves, mood boards, magazine clippings, anything that shows the direction you're considering

Physical materials—bring what you have:

  • • Any fabric or trim you're considering or want evaluated—new purchases, designer remnants, leftover yardage from previous projects, vintage textiles, or sentimental materials you want repurposed

  • • New or existing throw pillows, pillow covers, or pillow inserts you
want to use and have assessed for suitability and remaining lifespan

We'll assess suitability for your intended use, check yardage, and tell you what we can make with what you have—including whether and how supplementary materials would expand your options. If you need additional materials, we can source them through our in-studio collection and trade-level connections.

Most importantly: Bring your questions and ideas. We'll handle the rest.

A Note on Material Liability
: While we handle all materials with professional care, we cannot be held liable for damage to Customer's Own Materials during assessment, fabrication, or storage. We advise insuring valuable or irreplaceable materials before bringing them to our studio. This is industry-standard practice for Customer’s Own Material (COM) services.

What Our Clients Say About Their Personal Shopping Experience

Melissa helped me find just the right pillows, even though I forgot to bring fabric swatches with me and she only had the photo of my living room to go by. She encouraged me to take multiple pillow options home to try since my rug has such a distinctive color palette and pattern. They all looked good, but the ones I kept were such a soft chenille and the colors in the small pattern blend so well with my rug. The personalized attention made this so quick and easy, not to mention fun.

New client that tagged along with a friend for a Pillow Shopping Appointment
Winston-Salem, NC
★★★★★

I wasn’t sure what to expect when shopping in a working studio. I was surprised by how many pillows there were to choose from. Melissa kept me from getting overwhelmed and helped me put together a pillow arrangement that looks like she custom made it with my room in mind. She even had a throw blanket in just the right shade of spa blue to complement the blue in the pillows and my window treatments. The hard decision now is what room I want to shop for next.

High Point, NC
★★★★★

I bought Melissa’s pillows at Aubrey Home for years, even bought a few at
Martin’s Mercantile, but shopping in her studio is so much better. Yes, I had
to make an appointment and couldn’t just pop in, but I got to shop one-on-one with Melissa. And now all her pillows and fabrics are in one place. I love it. I found accent pillows for my bed and plan to make another appointment soon to talk to her about a dramatic long lumbar or bolster pillow for my settee. When I was there before I saw several fabrics that might pick up the colors in the artwork above the settee. And I’ll probably get another throw blanket or two. I love the coral-colored blankets I bought last time.

★★★★★

I have shopped with Melissa at Aubrey Home and in her studio several times. I like it much better now that all of her pillows are right there with all the fabric. If I don’t see a pillow already made that works, I can easily switch to looking for fabric and have her make custom pillows. She has such a good eye and explains why something works or doesn’t work. And she remembers what we put together last time so I just have to tell her what I’ve changed in the room since then.

FAQs

Both are complimentary 30-minute in-studio appointments, but they have different focuses.

A Personal Shopping Appointment is centered on browsing and selecting—shopping our in-stock throw pillows, pillow covers, fabrics, and trims, building throw pillow combinations, testing inserts, and finding what works for your space. It's a natural starting point if you want to see what we have ready to go home with you today and shop in-person with our pillow designer.

A Discovery Meeting is more project-focused—discussing a design challenge or project idea, exploring fabric possibilities with suitability and selection in mind, getting a quick Customer's Own Material (COM) evaluation, or understanding what's possible before planning a custom project. It's a natural starting point whether you have a specific project to talk through or just want to see what we offer and get an idea of how we work.

In practice, both appointments often cover some of the same ground—in-studio shopping and project discussion naturally overlap. Not sure which to book? A Discovery Meeting is almost always the right starting point for NC Triad clients.

→ Learn about Discovery Meeting | Schedule Discovery Meeting

Not at all. Many Personal Shopping Appointments start with "I want to update my living room pillows but I'm not sure where to begin." That's exactly what this time is for. Some clients arrive having a good idea of what they want and leave with throw pillows that match their vision or with pillows in a similar fabric that they like even better than what they came in looking for. Others arrive uncertain and leave with a throw pillow combination they're excited about and ideas for what to work on updating next. Either way, you’re likely to leave with more of a plan than you came with and additional options to consider—for the same space you came to work on or for another room or an outdoor space.

Absolutely—many clients bring a family member or friend whose opinion matters to them. Our studio is comfortable for small groups, and different perspectives often lead to better decisions. It's not uncommon to have mothers and daughters or sisters shopping together—those typically are our most lively appointments since suggestions and opinions are shared so freely.

That's completely fine. Personal Shopping Appointments are meant for browsing and exploring without pressure. You might get ideas for a future update, start planning a seasonal refresh, or simply learn what the selection might look like when you're ready to move forward. The value is in the knowledge and confidence you gain, not in leaving with a purchase—though many clients do find something they love and take it home on 24-Hour Approval to try before deciding.

Yes—our 24-Hour Approval is available exclusively to in-studio shoppers. Take our in-stock throw pillows, pillow covers, and throw blankets home to see how they look in your lighting, with your furniture and existing décor. All purchases are final sale, so we encourage you to use this option whenever you're uncertain.
